Differential?

Driving my bird out of state and hit a curb, supposedly snapped the axle at the rear passenger side wheel. Pretty upset I cannot take it to my mechanic, but this auto shop is ordering me a whole new rear end. They said it might have a different differential which would then lead to more work. I dont really understand what it does besides provide power, would it really matter if it was different and if so is it hard to switch my original differential onto the new axle? Thanks, any suggestions and comments much appreciated!

Re: Differential?

There are many things that could be different. The 3rd gen Camaro and Firebird rear ends had 26 spline axles up to '90, when they went to 28 splines. The gear ratio can be one of about 6, there was the Auburn and Governor Lock limited slip differentials and the standard differetnial. There are different housing ends and brakes. Why are they not just replacing the axle? It would be much easier and cheaper.

they said that if I got an axle it would be 500 and take possibly 3 weeks to get, while the used rear end would take a day andonly cost about 800.

You can purchase Moser axles from Summit for around $235 a pair and get them within two or three days.

I take my back if you're running a 9-bolt. If that's the case, you may have trouble finding a replacement. If you're running a 10-bolt, finding a replacement is as easy as going to Summit.

Who knows what you'll find inside a used rear? The calipers/rotors may need to be replaced. If the gear set is different than your old one, you'll need to replace the drive and/or driven gears in your tranny to make the speedo read correctly. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

If you have a 10-bolt, here's the part number you need (along with seals and bearings) from Summit: MSR-A102604

Note that you can even purchase a single axle.

Oh, and $800 for a used rear end is way out of line.

Re: Differential?

Sorry for not clarifying it but 800 is the total cost including labor.

Re: Differential?

Sounds like you're getting screwed. Why can't they remove an axle from the used rear end and put it in yours? Then you still have your rear end and no problems. What rear end is in your car? What brakes are on it?

Re: Differential?

if the hit was hard enough, it may have bent or distorted the flange or the tube and make repair much more difficult
