it's probobly been asked before but how much hp can an 84 T-5 handle assuming you go easy on it.

Also this may be a dumb question, but unless you're using slicks wouldn't the tires spin before you were able to wreck the transmission thus saving it even if you have like 500hp?

if your refering to putting 500hp in front of a t5, it wouldnt last a week, even if you took it easy. that t5 is not even strong enough to handle 300hp much less 500hp.

ok, but what i don't understand is if you have more power than traction how could you wreck the transmission since the wheels would just spin instead of putting stress on the transmissoin.

Even if the power isn't getting to the ground it still has to pass through the transmission & I can gaurantee that 3rd will be the first to go. I had a WC rebuilt using chromoly synchros & it only lasted a couple weeks behind my current 355. If you're going to be running that kinda of power & want a manual trans go w/ the Tremec or 6-speed. Besides, whats the point of the power if you can't get it to the ground? :-)

My 91 World Class T5 is handling 317 HP and 418 TQ to the rear wheels so far... Thats about 380 HP and 480 TQ at the trans input. Its been about three months and I've raced it three times.

It's also how you drive it. That doesn't mean his will last forever, but a good driver can make it last for awhile.

t-5's are funny that way. Some will last years behind huge motors with no problems, and some will last a day. Personally i have had mine behind a 300hp 350 for the past year and a half with no problems, and it has over 120000 miles on it. There is one guy around here that is running 11's or 12's with his stock t-5 and he drives it daily with no problems.

It all depends on how lucky you are, and how stupid you are when driving it.

Ask Tim Burgess, moderator of the electronics board, how long his T-5 has lasted. Here are some facts about his car:

1992 Z28
305, 5-speed
G92
Presently over 110k miles.
Runs consistent high 12's naturally aspirated.
Runs consistent low 12's with nitrous.
Been dynoed at 300 rhwp naturally aspirated.
Launches at 5,500 rpm.
Transmission has never been opened up.

Lucky? Maybe. But people need to know they can withstand abuse.

mine has been holding up fine over a year till a week ago over 300hp at the wheels yes dyno hp and not peak just average hp. I was given her hell till 3 and 4 sync. blew up. I don't know why my wc is rated for more hp than the older one I bought. the wc uses plastic bearing retainers. the reg t-5 is basically the same with some minor diff. any ways the wc is back in and doing fine glad it is a manual and I can fix it.

i hate my t-5,it needs an overhaul, but i can still drive it. i cant drop out of 5th and put in 4th unless i try about 3 times. i just dont have the $$$ right now for a rebuild. it also squeals when i put it in 5th. mine has 165,xxx miles on it,(never been opened) so i cant complain, but somethings always need to be fixed when your low on dough.

I have a 1987 iroc with a t-5 it has 180,000 miles on it. tranny has never been messed with, the only problem is the synchronizer for fifth gear is a little bad. And I get on it a little at least once a day.
