The leaky rear seal has been replaced, the tranny cooler lines have been replaced, pan gasket has been replaced and pan torqued appropriately. I went to fill up my transmission today after doing the lines which i THOUGHT was the culprit and as i poured it in it slowly drained out. It appears to be coming from somewhere near the servo. What could it be and what kind of a pain in the *** repair am I in for? As it stands now it wont hold fluid for more than a few minutes so driving it anywhere is not an option.

 

In front of the servo would be the rubber gasket around the dipstick. Not too difficult. The servo itself uses rubber o-rings. Much more difficult. Behind the servo would be the rubber gasket for the TV cable. Not too difficult. If you overtightened the cooler lines or replaced the servo, you could've cracked the case. Extremely difficult. Hey atilla thanks for the response. I took a closer look with my dental mirror and it is definitely not coming from the dipstick tube. Looking at the servo from the passenger side rocker the leak seems to be comming from above and to the left of the servo. I noticed a pool of tranny fluid by the detent cable, is this a common place for it to leak? How involved is that job? I know it was a bitch to get that damn thing hooked up when i put the tranny in. I want to enjoy this freakishly warm weather we're having so any help is appreciated. THANKS

 

There's a little o-ring around the shaft for the shift linkage. These generally don't start leaking, but it is possible. Above and to the rear of the servo is the TV cable. Both of these will require dropping the pan.

 

So your saying that to change out the TV o-ring, the pan must be dropped. Does this also mean the cable will have to be unhooked, one would think so but I'm just looking for clarification. is it easily accessible once the pan is down?

 

It's easiest to unbolt the 2 bolts that go into the VB, then undo the link. Then undo the bolt with a cut-off 10mm wrench. Then you can lift the TV cable away from the trans. The gasket may stay with the cable, or it may stay with the trans. It looks like a miniature version of the one for the trans dipstick, unless the dipstick uses the o-ring style. The new one should be slid into the trans, then put some ATF on the cable so it won't tear the gasket, then ease it into place.

 

Thanks for the breakdown atilla, ive got to track down one of these seals and then hopefully sometime this week i'll crawl under there and get this squared away. Thats the problem with these trannys that sat unused for a while and then thrown back into service, the seals are worth ****!!!! My fault for not changing them while it was sitting in my garage floor though. DOH

i've seen overzealous wrenchers crack the case at the pipe plug on the passenger side. Mostly that happens if the port uses a sensor though. what a waste of a 700r4 case. it is a very hard leak to find with the trans in the car. it normally cracks hairline towards the top in a straight line away from the pipe plug. there are 3 pipe plugs on the passenger side of the case, third oil-fourth oil-and second oil, to take pressure readings and for sensors in some makes and models.

 

Im fairly certain its the detent cable because thats where it is pooling. It could be something ABOVE that, but i dont think there is too much above that, that can leak. I remember how much of a pain it was to set that stupid mechanism up, not looking forward to doing it again but if it will stop the leak, also gives me a chance to change that filter while im in there.

 

There is a threaded plug high and forward on the driver's side. It's for attaching a gauge to read the line pressure.

 

I got myself a new TV cable seal at the transmission end. Got on my back and about 2 hours later had the new seal in and its LEAK FREE!!! What a PAIN in the *** bolt to get out without dropping the tranny. I did not drop the pan either cause I felt I had JUST enough access to the TV cable to get it hooked up properly. The leak is solved and the transmission seems to be shifting OK. Im gonna keep an eye on the level and play with the TV cable a little just so I get the WOT shift where I want it.
