700r4 to handle 500+ torque?
I want to build a 700r4 to handle a blown 383. I know turbo 350/400's are stronger, but I want to hang onto the overdrive. Is this reasonable? What would be necessary? Is a 30-spline BTW. Who makes the best (strongest) total rebuid kit- transgo/tci/levelten? Also looking for a good 2800rpm converter?
Thanks

yes it can if it is built right. there are some 700R-4's out there surviving 10sec blasts. And I know someone with a 525hp 400ci 86 pick-up that is running 10's with the 700R-4

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT
1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, ASCD SS hood, 16" IROC rims.
future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames, Hurst shifter, dakota digital gauge package, procharger supercharger.

I carry everything that is needed to build a 700R4 that will hold up to 550-600 horsepower. The torque converter I would recommend is a 9.5" ACT or Vigilante (2,600-2,800 rpm stall lockup), or the Continental 10" non-lockup with anti-ballooning plates (2,400-2,600 rpm stall). The rear end gear ratio has a lot to do with the stall. Is this vehicle a daily driver or a weekend warrior? These are things to consider when doing this setup. What if this happens and what about the steel input shaft splitting the the aluminum input drum.
I wouldn't use it.

I wouldn't call it raining on your parade, I'd like to save you the money and humiliation. But remember I am not a pro builder, this is only an educated guess and an opinion. I do like the 700 for vehicles with less power, 500+ is a lot, maybe a 4L80E would do you better?

this site says you can build a transmission that can hold up to 600 hp* and 575 lb/ft* torque on this rebuild. i am thinking about getting this done if it really can hold up that much
