Code numbers on 10 bolt housings?
I need to find an F-body 7.5" 10-bolt housing at a bone yard this week. I have 28 spline axles, a new Auburn posi, and the parts for a rebuild except the housing and gears (would like to find 3.23 or 3.42 gears). Anyone know what the code numbers are on F-body 10-bolt housings w/ 28 spline axles? Are the housings different widths for F-bodies than other GM cars? Will the number on the housing be different for different gear ratios?

Well, if you just need a housing and gears, check out 85-89 2.8 V6 F-bodies, with automatic transmissions. They got 3.42's. Spline count shouldn't matter at all; since you already have the posi and axleshafts, you can slide that stuff into the junkyard housing. The 3.42 gears are 7.5" rings, so I'd imagine they'd fit onto your posi carrier without a problem. Pull the diff cover and check 'em out before you buy the axle.
Oh- the strength of the gears in the V6 axle are equal to that of all f-bodies, including the V8's. In fact, if you manage to find a 4-cylinder 2.5l f-body, give it a good look- it could be hiding 3.73 gears!
