question about puting in Posi
I really dont know alot about what goes into rebuilding rear ends,so I plan on having someone do it for me, but I would like to be sure I buy the correct parts that I need to install a posi. I have a 91 camaro rs with 5.0 v8 and I was told that I have a 10-bolt with 7.625 open 2:73 ratio. From what I read in the FAQ section about 10-bolts my car comes stock with 28 spline axels, I know I need to buy a posi carrier and I have read that the Eaton posi is the one I should use also that I need a set of bearings and shims as well as a new diff cover for extra strgenth. I also don't know what gear ratio I should upgrade to, like I said before I really dont know that much about this type of upgrade. My maine concern is if my information is correct, am I forgeting something and what gears should I use. If anyone has done this upgrade before I would love to have a list of what parts you used as well as what you did. Thanks for your help and patience with this newbie to the thirdgen world..lol.

Re: question about puting in Posi
i went from 2.73 to 3.23 in mine, i like em, its a good combo of low end and cruisabilty
the eaton is good if you can afford it,
i put all new seals and bearings in mine, new brake line, 100% new brakes and a used low mile set of 3.23
i was going eaton, but they where on back order everywhere it seemed. i went with the pro serries from auburn, its better than the regular auburn, the 5 year pro rated warrenty and all i said the hack with it, if it last 5 years thats good enough for me.... if it dont i will swap it out on the pro rated thing, and sell the one they send my back and get an eaton

Re: question about puting in Posi
Did this a couple years ago.
Put in 3.73s with Auburn posi.
While I was replacing things...
I went to 30 spline axles (not necessary unless you have some big HP plans later on)
I also added the Rearend girdle you mentioned.
Definitely woke the car up.
Absolutely a good upgrade. Higher # gears are great if you want a lot of pep, but don't make a lot of long trips. (Drinks gas a bit on the highway)
If you drive a lot on the highway, 3.23s would be a better choice.
Good luck with your upgrade.

Re: question about puting in Posi
Randy's Ring & Pinion has a posi unit by Yukon that I'm running now. It's a great unit and much smoother than the locker I was running. 3.73s are the gold standard for a street gear. Going up a full point of gear like that will give you bang for buck close to nitrous. You could drop a full second off your 1/4 mile, which is like adding 100 HP.
Get a posi unit for 28 spline axels, a bearing kit, a shim kit, and a set of gears (get American made like the Yukon gears from Randy's, no cheapie import junk, it's worth the extra $40). I would suggest ditching the crush sleeve and going to a solid spacer too. If you do the rear end girdle get a set of studs for the caps too. I like TA Performance for these. Definiately look at your axels and pinion yoke too. If the seal surfaces are scored, and/or the car has high milage I would replace the axels and yoke. It sucks to spend time and money building a rear just to have an axel break, or a seal leak. Moser makes a good axel kit for these cars for about $250 I think. I'm running them and love them. A new yoke will set you back about $75, but again is well worth it to prevent a puddle on the floor. A rear built like that will be the strongest 7.625" 10 bolt you can have. It's not going to be a 9", 12 bolt, or Dana 60 no matter what you do, but it will live a long life on the street regardless of power, and should even do well with limted strip duty. I don't know if I'd run slicks on it, but sticky DOT tires should be fine.

Re: question about puting in Posi
You need the Eaton Posi, gear set and a good installation kit. The 3.42 is very popular along with the 3.73. The 3.42 would be better if you are on the highway a lot. A new Eaton is $435, gears are about $200 and the installation kit is between $90 and $100. Be sure to check the axles for wear. A new set of axles is around $200 and bearings and seals are $20.

Re: question about puting in Posi
I bought all my stuff from Moser. They were reasonably priced and have good quality products. Then I found a reputable mechanic locally to put the gears in for me and set it up.

Re: question about puting in Posi
You will have to change the speedo gear in your transmission. You will have to do a search on which gear you will need to get it accurate again.

Re: question about puting in Posi
do a search on here for speedo gear swap, just read them all, some have links that tell you exactly what you need, i got lucky on my swap and only had to change the cable gear, not the shaft gear also
i think on my post "2.73 to 3.23 speedo gear swap" has some good links on it
