Tranny Swap question.
Tranny Swap question.
I have a 84 Camaro with a 350 carb. What manual transmission can i swap into my car? The car was originally a manual and still has the pedals hooked up. All ive been able to find is that the T5 wont hold the torque of the TPI 350 but i dont have that. - Thanks

Re: Tranny Swap question.
Depends how much you want to spend, and how much mod work do you want to do.. The TKO line, a T56 retro or LT1, even a built T5 will handle mild power of a 350, all depends how you apply it..
Check the T56 stickies, search for TKO swaps, and look around for others keeping their T5s alive behind 350s..

the 350 right now is bored 30 over has a 486 lift cam, and is set up for street/drag, i would like to keep the tanny swap on the low side of pricing. so i can finish the restore of the car. but im going to look more into this t56 retro

Re: Tranny Swap question.
If you don't care about gas mileage, engine life, or noise, run a Super T-10 from a '77.5-'79 Z28. That version had the 2.64/1.75/1.34/1.00 gearing. Avoid any '80-'83 F-car T-10, nearly all of them had the weak 3.42/2.28/1.46/1.00 gearing. MAYBE SOME '82-'83 Z28s with 3.23:1 axle, and MAYBE SOME '84-'87 4+3 'vettes came with the 2.88/1.91/1.33/1.00 gearing. Alot of the '77-'80 Camaros that were not Z28s or automatics had a 2.85/2.02/1.35/1.00 gearset, but that trans might have an iron case. The TransAms with the 455 used either the old muncie, or a super T-10 with 2.43/1.61/1.23/1.00 gearing, and birds with the best Poncho 400 could have either the 2.43 or 2.64 versions. Again, the 3.42:1-first version is weak, but the 2.88 version will take a 350 just fine. since the '83 Z28 could still have a T-10, scrounging an older one is valid. You will need a Lakewood bellhousing, The '83 T-10 bellhousings are far too rare. Nearly all the '83s with V8 and manual came with the T5.

I think i might try my luck with the T5 swap, and if later on after the swap if it needs the upgrades to beef it up ill do it then. I just cant stand driving Autos, i bought this car as a weekend driver, so this swap is on the top of my to do list asap.
