What benefits will locking up the torque converter produce??

What benefits will locking up the torque converter produce??
i have a 700-r4 with a 2800 rpm stall converter. my friends all talk about locking it up and all the difference itll make. i know how to lock it up with the aldl but dont know why. any help will be appreciated.

According to most people, it will gain you a tenth, and help you burn out your converter quicker.

Yep, I was faster by a little over a tenth in the 1/4. Don't use it all the time...
