th400====does it really fit?
th400====does it really fit?
I have a turbo 400 in my 84 z28. I've been told it's a tight fit by some, and others say it shouldn't fit at all. Well, it's in there alright, but the brace that's holding it underneath looks like it's rippin a little, and the linkage is very jimmy-rigged <my pardon's to anyone named Jimmy>
If a tranny the size of mine were to be properly installed, what would need to be done? Mabye it'll be better to take it out and put it in right. The car vibrates slowly but loudly at around 55mph and above, and I think it might be due to the tranny being put in wrong. Any suggestions would help immensly guys. Thanks

The 400 isn't particularly big or anything. What ever fit problems you are having isn't because of that. If it's a 400 and not a 375, it has a different output shaft than a 700 or T-5 (both of which are the same as a T-350); I'd look at things in that area if you have a post-trans driveline vibe. It would need one of those special U-joints, which is probably bad; unless somebody had a drive shaft made up for it, in which case it might be unbalanced or not true or something. Defintiely get the mounting situation straightened out though; if the drive shaft comes out of the trans for any reason at speed, it will fall out and hit the ground, and pole-vault the rear end through the rear of the car. That's why tracks require drive shaft loops.

Where were these people who said it shouldent or wont fit getting thier informnation from?
The 400 isnt much larger than a 350 the only problems Ive had from 700r4 to tb350 to tb400 is the downshift linkage "the 400 has electronic downshift that attaches to the gas pedel", the crossmember had to be relocated a few inches and the driveshaft had to be custom made from the 200c one and a 400 yoke 200$ So you might want to find a shop that does custon driveshaft work and ballancing.
The driveshaft loop is just a piece of metal "U" that is bolted to the bottem of the car the driveshaft goes through this, If the drive shaft pops out of the trans it will only travel a few inches and not hit the ground saving you from driveshaft and rear end damage.
Good luck!

Hurst makes a changeover kit for both the TH350 and TH400. The TH400 kit comes with the new crossmember. Both come with a bracket allowing you to reconnect the torque arm.
