Help, is my 700r4 going bad?

I have a TH700r4 which was built by Premier Performance about 8 years ago. It has a non-lockup convertor if it matters. It worked fine last year, but this year I switched the engine/tranny to a different vehicle, and now it doesn't want to shift at WOT. I have to let off the gas to get it to shift 1-2 and 2-3, and then it shifts pretty soft. I added a B&M Hammer shifter in the new vehicle, but it does this when the shifter is in any gear. At part throttle it still works fine. I've checked and double-checked the TV cable and I'm sure it's fine. The only thing I did to it was change the fluid/filter while it was between vehicles. Anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it? Or is it just time for me to start thinking about getting a new tranny? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I know you said you checked it, but that sure sounds like the TV cable to me

Two things come to mind. First, do this and recheck: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the D button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Second: what WAS the axle ratio of the original car and what IS the axle ratio of the currect vahicle?

Thanks transfixleo, I'll try that. It's got a good solid Edelbrock mounting bracket, so I don't think it flexes, but I'll give it a shot. I tried pulling the TV cable out one click from where I had it, and then it shifted 1-2, but it was still way too soft, and I think a little late (6500 rpm-ish while in Drive). Plus, the part-throttle shifts seemed a tiny bit early, so I returned it to where it was. But I'll give your method a shot and see what happens.

The old vehicle had 4.11 gears. The new vehicle HAD 3.42 gears when I got it running, and I drove it for a month that way. Then I put in an SLP HD posi and 3.73s, and it's been about a month since then. It has shifted funny with both gear sets.

I don't think it matters, but I also forgot, in the old vehicle, the speedo was mechanical. In the new vehicle, the speedo is a stand-alone electronic, so obviously I had to change the speedo gears over to a VSS. When I was putting the VSS metal "gear" on, I had to tap it onto the output shaft a little. I didn't tap it that hard, and I had a buddy try to hold the output shaft, but hopefully that didn't damage something on the other side of the shaft.

Thanks again!!!

Well, I tried to re-adjust the TV cable, and that didn't appear to have any effect. Also, another strange thing I found out over the weekend, if I'm going down the highway at 65 MPH or whatever, and punch it, it seems like the tranny shifts down straight into second. The engine goes right to redline and bounces off the rev limiter. Thanks again for any help!!!

You may need to start at the governor, going to heavier weights and see what happens. WHile I am tempted to say that the 3-4's may not be holding, that wouldn't explain hitting second since the tranny would TRY for 3rd at a certain speed and if it wasn't there it would just redline, is that what you think is happening or does it pull like it is in second?

To me it feels like it just never tries to shift. If I leave it to the floor, it will just sit and bounce off the rev limiter, until I let off the throttle a little, then it shifts right away, but it shifts softly. It never flairs up or stops pulling, it just takes like a full 2 seconds to shift. Up to about 3/4 throtte it acts totally normal, and it never really feels like it's slipping. So far it's been 2000 miles since the swap, and it doesn't feel like it's getting any worse or anything. But, the 2-3 shift does seem slightly worse than the 1-2 shift, like I have to let off the throttle a little more to get it to shift.
So where can I get weights for the governor? Or should I just buy the whole B&M kit? Would this fix the shift softness too, or just the lateness? Thanks again!

The B&M Governor kit is probably your best bet since you will be able to tailor it but it is just to correct shift timing problems. For shift quality/durability issues get a TransGo Shift Kit or Reprogramming Kit.
