TH-350 help please!?!?
I just fired up my freshly machined 327 in my 84 camaro. Everything mechanical is new except for my transmission which does'nt seem to want to shift out of 1st. What could the problem be? I have brakeline running from the vac-modulator and a new vac-modulator. It's hooked into the vaccuum port in the back of my intake. Could it be because of my kickdown cable is not hooked up right? How do you hook it up right? Any other suggestions??? I just wish it would shift outta first!! I also put a shift kit in it. Thank you for the help.

One more thing, what is the governor that I keep reading about?? Is that the little thing that screws into the tailshaft and turns the plastic like gears in there? on the drivers side? I thought that was the speedometer hook-up. thank you

Yep the kick down cable HAS TO BE CORRECT in order to operate properly. To adjust the cable have someone sit inside the car and push the gas pedel to the floor, then check the cable for free play or over tightness to adjust it just push the little black button in and slide the cable back or forward depending on whats wrong. There should be a little slack in the cable a few centemeters is normal.
Good luck!

Oh BTW the governer is a T shaped kind of thing the two arms - - move inward this governs the shift points. I dobt this is your problem though.

It's not the kick down cable, you can leave it off but it's not recommended. I'd check the governor, my guess would be that the trans is set up for something like a 3.73 gear and you have something in the 2.73 to 3.08 range? Might also check the shift linkage for correct adjustment. I could be the vacuum modulator out of adjustment, aftermarket replacements have a set screw inside the hose connection. Make sure it's connected to a direct manifold vacuum source. The governor is located on the drivers side in front of the speedo cable under a round cover. What is the history of the trans? have you seen it work properly before?

Not shifting out of first is usually a modulator problem.
Take the vacuum line off the modulator. With the engine running put a finger over the line. You should feel suction at idle. If there isn't then either the line is plugged or it's ported wrong.
If you can get it to shift to second at WOT only then the detent cable needs to be adjusted.
Last thing to check would be a defective governor. It's behind the round cover on the drivers side at the rear of the tranny. You can take the cover off and pull the governor out to inspect it.
