700R4 to 2004R, needed parts?
Does anyone know of anybody who sells the crossmember and other related parts to go from a 700 to a 2004R? What about getting the parts from Pontiac or somewhere that were used in the 89 Turbo T/A's? Is it available? I'm sick of having 700R's with their problems. The 200R4 is just a better way to go and it's worth it to me to swap out the 700R instead of wasting anymore money rebuilding another one of these units.
Sorry, I'm not answering your question, but I do have a quick question about the 200R4... it doesn't have the huge 1-2 gap that the 700's do, does it? What are the disadvantages to using it over the 700?

Thanks, I'll check out his parts. I already bought his lca's and lca relocation brackets but didn't see the tranny stuff, guess it was b/c I wasn't looking for that then.
I can think of no disadvantages to running the 2004R over the 700R, only advantages. Your correct that the 200R doesn't have as big a gap between the 1-2 shift. It also can be built alot stronger then the 700R.
If there is a disadvantage it's that you have to spend the extra money on a new drive shaft, crossmember, etc. but that's about it.

Well, I could tell you a few diasadvantages. I replaced one for a guy with a 700r4 who had rebuilt it twice prior. They dont stand up well behind ANYTHING above stock, at least from my experience. As far as parts to retrofit. Your frame is predrilled for it(it waas at one time the tranny for the thirdgen. SO get a torque arm/crossmember/driveshaft out of an 82 Z28 and you will be fine. Mike. Btw, Im in no way putting you down for converting, I just havent known anyone to like them

I don't know, they are suppossed to be pretty stong, especially when built up. The 700R is known to be weak and even building them up they have some weaknesses that can't be fixed. I don't doubt you know people who's had bad expierences but for me the 700R has been nothing but headaches. I could drive the car fine, don't get me wrong, but I wanted more race performance and this thing doesn't have it.
As far as the torque arm/crossmember from the 82 Camaro, does the torque arm bolt to the crossmember or to the tranny b/c I heard the 200R doesn't have provisions on it for the arm. Also, wasn't the 200 used in those early third gens a 200C three speed? I've heard of a metric 200R and was told that's not what I want either. It has to be the ones from the TTA or Buick G/N.

the gear ratios on a 200r are MUCH better than the 700r, Art Carr has made a 200r that can withstand 1100 hp!!!!! checkout umi p/n 2217.

What all needs to be swapped for the 200? I'm thinking of ddoing this eventualy in my 84, though I just put in a new aluminum drive shaft, will I have to get a new one? Only reason I ask is because Inland Empire advertises it as an 82-92. How about the tranny coolant lines to the radiator?

I know a guy who builds 700r's for $2795 can handle about 700hp and 3 year warranties. the 200 is a **** trans

Crossmember mounting point is further back (it's the same spot as a TH400.) To address this and the torque arm mounting, go aftermarket crossmember w/ tq. arm mounting points.
Coolant lines fit fine.
I've had 5 different stockish 200-4Rs and 700-R4s in my 87 and that's just since I bought it. I prefer the 200-4R.

Well, I have a mechanical speedo, and I would assume (bad thing to do in most cases), that as long as you get the right drive/driven gears, the speedo cable will mount up though you may need to lenghthen it depending on it's location on the tranny.

For a 200-4R into a speed density / elec speedo car, you'd probably want to go with an aftermarket VSS that threads onto the speedo driven gear sleeve. The 1989 Turbo TransAm had a VSS but it would be hard to find, the wrong signal and wrong pulse count.

#350E (use of buffer box to adjust the signal)

# 4PAC (4004 AC pulse per mile as req. by the `730 ECM)
The transmission will still require the correct ratio speedometer gears (1001rpm @ 60mph)
