CONVERTER HELP NEEDED ASAP
CONVERTER HELP NEEDED ASAP
Is a 2400 stall converter too high for a TPI 350, ZZ4 cam, and 3.70 gears? My cruise RPM right now is about 2250. Will this kill my mileage? And will it make the car faster?

It will probably be just fine. As for cruise, as long as Lock Up is functional it won't change at all. Just do yourself a favor and spend the money on a good converter unless you suspect the tranny is not long for this world. In that case, get the cheapy and when the tranny goes get a good one and you will know if you like that stall with your combo. The reason I say that is that when the tranny goes it will 99% of the time take the converter out too.

I'm running an approx. 2800 stall on a ZZ-4, 3.73 gear setup and it's fine. I did however spend the money and get a good, custom built converter. It is a non-lockup and the rpm's are still pretty good. The lock-up won't save you that many rpm's, maybe 200 on flat ground cruising. If someone builds it for you right they should be able to make it a "tight" converter so you'll be fine. Also if this helps, at about 55mph I'm at about 2250rpm in O/D.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my convertor was a 10" unit, that's why no lock up. I put in a tranny cooler too b/c of the extra heat of the small unit and no lock up.
Size has nothing to do with it. I was running a P.I. Vigilante 9.5" and it had TCC lockup, and other vendors make 10" converters with this.

I had mine built at a race tranny shop and they don't build small lockup convertors. I don't remember the reason they gave me but the smaller units do build up more heat.
I don't know what changes were made to the unit but the lock up electrical control cable is disconnected. The tranny otherwise works like it did before except for that complaint I had about it shifting crazy late into 3rd under WOT. It did this before the rebuild too. Someone told me something to do with the 2-3 shift burns out easy and that's why it's not grabbing fast and shifting? I don't know but I hate my tranny now, that's why I don't want another 700R, I'm too scared to spend more money on one.
