T5 Swap for those who have done it, a few ?'s
I'm going to look at a T5 setup tomorrow, a guy is swapping it out for an automatic, and he is selling everything needed to do the swap. Before I invest in doing this, I have some questions that I couldn't really find from the how-to and searching.
1: If I install the manual trans, how will this affect the stock automatic computer controls in regards to the automatic? Will the car stall when I come to a stop? In my book it describes the park/neutral switch, which tells the ECM when the trans is in park or neutral. Is there a way to ground this out so it thinks its always in neutral?
2: Can I swap out the prom for a manual transmission one? Will this solve the above problem of idling, or not killing the engine when I come to a stop?
3: Will the VSS that comes on this manual transmission give me any speedometer reading? I believe I need to get a new driven gearto correct the speedo, but I have the lowly 2.77 rear end. Is there a gear available that will mate the two?
4: The how-to in the tech section does not mention about the torque arm mount, but other threads do. Is the difference in the torque arm itself, or can I just swap the bushings to bolt it to the transmission?
It doesn't seem to be a very difficult swap, but I'm trying to find out more of the later issues after everything is bolted up. Thanks.

Ok ecm is just the engine only. the Prom is for engine and transmission. I would almost bet since you have an 86 it won't bother it. Hook it up the only thing u have to do it do some wiring with the nuetral switch back up switch ect.... that is on the automatic shifter. called a nuetral safety switch heard its easy just hook it up. there is a post if i can find it i will show you.

Cool, I did end up getting this setup. I also got question #4 answered. The torque arm mount is different, but I got the mount/bushing that goes with the T5. Pretty complete setup, I have everything except the upper console and pilot bearing. Good luck Berlin305. I guess this is the bump for the remaining 3 questions!

Who are you buying from? I was buying from a fellow here by the name of ron I believe who was also doing an auto conversion, after I sent payment I kept getting excuses about shipping it, and eventually nothing, so I had to file a paypal claim to get my money back. just a heads up, if your getting it in person, much better for you.

The gear selector sensor is attached to the shifter assembly and you can easily jumper two wires to over-ride that feature, I do not remember the wire colors off the top of my head. I'm doing a complete engine and tranny swap so I am learning custom prom tuning, It is very easy to delete auto tranny, I think I read that the only thing that the ecu runs through the trans is the t converter lock up.
As far as stalling, I do not think you have anything to worry about because when you come to a stop you should either have your clutch let in or your tranny out of gear so it would be no different than your auto car ideling in park or neutral.
With the speedo, it all matters what drive gear you have if there is one that will match up. GM dealerships can order you the drive and driven gear for under 20 bucks but changing the drive gear is a big ordeal. You have to find a parts man willing to work with you cause as far as I know GM ships those parts (and most other small bs parts) in 5 packs and I have had guys trying to sell me all 5 because he didn't 4 of them sitting on his shelf.
Hope that helps.
