10 bolt posi is clanking-chattering

The axle groans and has a strong binding sound that comes from what seems more like the left wheel than the center of the axle. on straight starts and stops it does it. Its more noticeable on low speed turns , 0-20 mph.
I took the drums off thinking it was a frozen brake shoe, because thats what it feels like, but they were fine.
I've tried everything, synthetic oil w/ posi lube, regular oil w/lube, even the gm stuff. It all works for like a day, and then it starts again.
Friend thinks its the clutches in the posi, I don't think it is because it does it when it going straight also, its also only in the left wheel. I think its the outer bearing, but he says it couldn't be because it would only happen at high speeds.
If it is the outer bearing, how would i get the axle out to replace it?
if it the posi, how much am I looking at to replace it?

Thanxs guys!!

I had the same problems as you describe with
my 10 bolt. Solution, find a used rear and replace it. How is the time to upgrade to
rear disc brakes (89) and later. Replaced mine with 89 B-W 9bolt 2:77 Possi & PBR disc's. Good Luck

well I don't have the money to do the brake swap, unless I found the rear end all together in a junkyard, and fool the joe behing the counter. Whats the likely hood that I'd find a 9 bolt with drums in a junkyard?

heres another question, when switching to disc in the rear, what will I need to adapt it to my drum lines, anything?

If you find a 89 9bolt with disc's? You will need the emgr. brake cables, the proportioning valve and possibly some brake line fittings( SAE to Metric). Thats it, a direct bolt on.

How much should I be expecting to pay for a 9 bolt rear end? or any rear end for that matter?

ok, that any rear end thing was supposed to be a joke, Is there anything wrong with running my existing 10 bolt right into the ground? I assume when it goes I'll lose my limited slip? Any danger just using it till it dies? Is that going to effect any other parts of my drivetrain or engine? (I'm too poor right now to go junkyarding!)

Expect to pay from $200/500 depending on condition. You can drive your car to complete failure, just don't drive it to hard
(burn outs & etc). Don't worry about your Limited Slip, because that and a wheel bearing are whats shot. Start saving your money, and remenber don't abuse that rear end.

Yeah, I never really abuse this thing, its worth too much to me. The guy I bought it off of however, used it in his "stunt driving course!" I found out about this after running into one of his students who recognized the car. Turns out he used it for two years of instruction, eg. peel outs, 180s, slides, j-turns, doughnuts, figure 8s, etc. The worst part is he never changed the fluids. Oh well, I guess I learned on that one. Thanks for your reply!!
