t5 install problems
t5 install problems
in the process of swapping over my car to a 5 speed. i installed the flywheel and pressure plate and the allignment tool slid in and out with ease. when i got the transmission in and tightened it up the transmission bounded up and it took some effort to turn the output shaft with the drive shaft in it. when i lossened it up the bind went away. what would cause it to bind up with it tighten down?

Was your pilot bearing installed correctly? If it isn't straight it will bind up. Probably a stupid question but I have to ask...Was the trans in gear? Just to make sure u weren't trying to turn a motor along with the trans?

Alignment tools work but are not great. It was probably slightly out of alignment causing it to bind. As soon as you depress the clutch the mis alignment should correct itself as long as you didn't damage the piolt bearing by tighting down the trans when it wasn't aligned properly.

did the trans slide all the way in or did you pull it together with the bolts? if so, you probably damaged the pilot and or clutch disc.
Or, as somebody else mentioned, try pushing the clutch pedal in and see what happens.

Re: t5 install problems
it was real tight going in, and when i tightend it down the last little bit it would bind up, but would free up when it was loosened. pilot bearing is in correct. im gonna take it apart and remove the pilot bearing. its the only thing i could think that would bind it up. its like it needs a shim or something. its aggravating me

When I aligned my clutch I used my hands more than the tool. I stuck the tool in but the disc wanted to sag so I just made sure the disc was centered on the flywheel on all sides using my hands while I tightened the bolts down. The trans should mate flush with the bell housing without having to draw it in with the bolts if it is lined up correctly.

I'd say take the clutch back off and inspect the piolt bearing to make sure you didn't damage it and that it still spins freely. Then realign/install the clutch. Then make sure the tranny mates flush to the bellhousing before putting the bolts in.
