A winey rear end

I'm starting to wonder about my rearend, when I let off the gas completely the rear end wines as I slow down, it's always done this and both my old cars and my friends car do the same thing. Is it just the gears or is something a-stray? It seems to work fine but I think the winey noise is getting louder, can anyone offer a remedy?

I have a 96 TA and am currently have the rear end changed to a 12 bolt with 4.10 gears cause it made a winey sound also. It ended up being the ring & pinion gears were misaligned. I would get it checked out before you end up haveing to replace the rear end

Mine whines too. If it whines as you let OFF on the gas, that is OK... if it whines while you are ON the gas, that is bad!

Gear whine usually starts to become really audible around 35+ MPH under accell, decel, or both.

Bearings usually make a growling sound, and can be heard at almost any speed, but changes in pitch according to speed.

yeah- they tend to do that just a fraction of a millimeter of gear movement can cause them to whine around turns, at accel or decel like someone above had mentioned, l installed a set of 3.73's in my IROC and had a slight whining problem like you guys mentioned, your best bet would to not worry unless the whine is causing resistance or becomes consistantly louder, check your rearend fluid, drain it, fill it up with synthetic, and don't forget posi fluid. another remedy that almost made my whine inaudible was a diff cover strengthener, its a heavy-duty cover, and has 2 bolts that you can torque the bearing caps down with to reduce flex and whine.

good luck

It may also be amplified by a worn rear suspension bushing, good bushings isolate noise, if one is bad and contacting metal it will make a normal rear sound noisey.
You may change the fluid and inspect it's color and inspect the gears, bearings and shims, the iron side bearing spacers sometimes crack. Also try to move the pinion to check for a loose bearing (or nut) this will cause noise while decelerating.

Mine did it. We thought it was a bad pinion bearing. Until the pinion gear broke. In my case there must have been a hairline crack on some of the teeth caused by the previous owner. The rear came out of my 88 Iroc. All fixed now thanks to a new (used) ring & pinion gear set.

I have found the source of the whining in the rear. It turns out my pinion bearing was bad. My posi unit also is gone, that was causing a sort of grinding sound while in reverse. I am looking into getting 3.42 rear out of a V6 to replace mine. Thanx for the help.

Fluid isn't going to help.

However, you could try the old used-car rip-off thing, and add a bunch of sawdust to the rear end fluid; that will shut it up long enough to sell it, it'll last maybe 50 miles or so and then the rear will be REALLY destroyed, and then all you have to worry about is the guy you ripped off that way, coming back and trying to kill you.

Seriously, fluid isn't going to help. If you could fix a gear whine with fluid, there'd be a sight more people in the world actually changing their fluid.

Oh boy yea when i let up off the gas the whining in my rear end goes away as well,.,.,.,.what is this about what jay said?? some thing about "a worn out suspension busing letting metal to metal contact happing,. making a normal rear end sound noisey"? how likely is this for my situation,. im currently driving around like this and my shocks are shot in the rear. i know this cause every time i go over a speed bump i hit hard in the rear,.,.,.Also every one tells me that a rear end aint worth replacing! just put in a used one,.,.can i replace the internals like [pinion bearing, pinon,] with out droping the rear end?? if so what speacil tools will i need? anyway my whining noise is similar the last guy on hear it goes away when i let off the gas???
what the hack to do??

does any one out there know what is actually wrong inside there??

well I have 3:42 gears in mine and it wines also but thats because of the aftermarket gears. My teacher said that the stock gears are specialy designed so that they dont make noise. He said it was the close tolerance between the teeth so maybe the teath are just wearing down.

well if your gonna do a complete swap do a 4th gen with 3:42 gears and rear disk brakes. that would probabaly be the best swap. the only problem is that you will need different weals because the axle is about 2" longer and it makes the tires stick out. Or you can find a rare 3rd gen rear with disk brakes. its up to you
