Ok, I pulled my tranny as it was making a clicking sound only in second gear, not first or third...
It is an 83 700R4 w/o an auxilary valve body... I took it apart, and the 2-4 band was blackened...
This was a tranny I rebuild a year ago using a wider band and a corvette servo... so whats this mean? With the vette servo and the wider band, i figgured the band would have no problem grabbing... so whats up?
I'm replacing it with an 89 updates that has the aux valve body and thicker input shaft, but still using the vette servo and a new wider band, think ill have the same problem?

Toss the wider band and get a Borg Warner High Energy band. Now get a TransGo Reprogramming Kit and FIX the tranny. Make sure the drum is FLAT. If it isn't OR it has hot spots, toss it too.
You will NOT be able to use the '89 parts in your tranny since it has a different case. Get a TransGo Shift Kit too so you can fix the horrible shift timing of an '83.

How do you check the input drum for flatness? Just lay a machinist's straight edge across it, and see if the center's worn down (like a brake rotor)?

Yes, with the straight on the drum it should be flat, if it's lower in the middle it's junk. If you get a used drum, check it the same way. Do not try to squeak by here, or it will be apart soon. Use the BW Hi-Energy band & Trans-Go Shift kit as transfixleo suggested. If the drum needs to be sanded, sand around the drum in direction of rotation only & with nothing rougher than 320-400 grit. As stated earlier drum must be flat!
