What color driven gear do I need? Quick
I need to get a new driven gear housing this week. The car is an IROC with the 16 inch rims. It had stock 2.73 gears and I just put in 3.43's. I need to order this by wednesday.

Assuming this is a 700R4 automatic, since you didnt mention it, a quick search of this board would tell you its 15 and 42.

Its the drive gear on the output shaft of the transmission. Just pull out the driven gear and look inside to see what color the drive gear is.

OK now I'm confused. I searched through the old posts and I'm bewildered. I saw some posts where people said they had to remove the tranny to replace the drive gear.....I don't want to do that. Is there any way to change it without removing the tranny or tearing off the tailshaft? Also I need to get the sleeve because that's what I broke in the first place. Does anyone know if an 89 IROC with a 700R4 came with the long or short style sleeve?

To get to the drive gear you will have to remove the tail-shaft (and drive-shaft), but not the entire transmission unless the drive gear is the same color as the one you need.

Is it safe to assume that there is a tailshaft gasket that I will need to get? Is this the only gasket I will need? What about an o-ring for the driven gear housing? It was just rebuilt so there's a chance I may be able to reuse many of the seals but I just want to be prepared.

What kind of rear axle has a 3.43 gear ratio? Are you sure it is not a 3.42 gear?
Like others have said, the tailshaft housing will need to be removed to get the drive gear off the output shaft if you need to replace it. What gear ratio did the rear axle used to be? What color is the drive gear? The driven gear? What part did you break, the VSS itself (as in the part that the wiring harness plugs into)?
And for g0ds sake, settle down and take it one step at a time...... If you do have a 3.42 gear and the transmission has the grey drive gear (the one on the output shaft of the transmission), all you need to do is get the yellow driven gear. If the transmission has some other color drive gear, you will need to replace it with the grey drive gear and also get the yellow driven gear for the VSS. The GM part numbers are below for the gears you need (if it is a 3.42). you should not need any other parts to do the swap.

If you need the VSS (if that is what you broke), just head over to the dealer and look up the VSS for an 89 IROC or whatever application you need this for.....
