I have heard that the better shift kits are made by Art Carr or Transgo. They come with premium gaskets & quality materials.
Good luck.
PS It will definetly extend your tranny life.

You can get teh TransGo "Stick Shift" which means whatever gear you put it in, is what gear its going to be. For instance, on a regular auto, if you put it in D (3rd), it will still start out in first, then go to second and stop at 3rd. With the Stick shift, it will start out in 3rd, and stay in 3rd untill you either upshift into OD or downshift into 2nd or 1st. That sounds awsome if you are a serious drag racer, but for a dailer driver, that seems a little much.
TransGo kits are not for the average DIYer, nor would I trust it to a shop that doesn't do them. I have done a few myself, and I still have to read the instructions over and over. TransGo kits are not the POS you find on the shelves of PepBoys, they are Quality, proffesional kits, and if you do get on installed, I think you will really like it.

Well I guess that would not matter if I had to shift it like that . I have manually shifted my car before from 1st , 2nd , then overdrive ? ...Hmm wonder how much this kit would cost and how much instalation is ?

I would highly recommend the TransGo kit but NOT the full manual, at least not for the street. The auto setup will allow you to hold a gear as long as you want and to downshift to any gear too and still work as an automatic otherwise. I see no reason for a full manual on the street and it is very easy to toast your tranny if you forget a few times and take off in the wrong gear. Also it gets very old shifting an auto on the street, it is NOT like a standard at all.

The TransGo kit will give you most of the firmness you desire, but you will need the "Corvette Servo" to complete the package.

Here is a source for it: http://www.hptransparts.com/MM007.ASP?pageno=89
By the way, I have an '88 2.8 myself. I just redid the tranny in it. I used the V-8 Servo but as mentioned, if you mant firmer 1-2 and 2-3 shifs you can use the Vette Servo, I just thought it was a bit of overkill for my stock 2.8. I didn't even use the Reprogramming Kit but instead used the TransGo 700 Jr. Shift Kit. I did use their Hi Rev Release Springs (that come as part of the Reprogramming Kit). I went up to a 2600 stall and it really woke up the car.
