One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?
One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?
Hey all. I did a search, and it's such a weird question that I couldn't come up with much. I've got a '90 Firebird that's been sitting for a year and now it's time to go do emissions. While sitting, one of its front tires exploded and is completely useless to me. I'm broke. I want to swap one tire from my 2000 Firebird onto it, just for the trip to and from emissions (three miles, all lightly-traveled surface streets). My rims are V6 stock on both cars. Both donuts are useable but I'd rather not use 'em if this'll work. Is there a problem?

i would put it on the rear, not the front.
you will need a spacer, not sure if you an buy just one. they are not 10$, probably 50 or so each, if you could be just one.

wheel spacers anyone? http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/S...u=wheel+spacer
Re: One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?
Thanks for the link, but if I've got to order something online, I'd rather just drive on the spare. If I can find a spacer at AutoZone, I'd consider buying it and returning it that day.
Thanks! I've been reading for a couple years now, but I don't typically have much to add to threads. This place is a fantastic resource, though!
The 1990 is about the most basic Firebird possible. I added power windows, door locks and mirrors using the body control module of a 4th gen. That gives me retained accessory power, remote keyless entry with factory key fob (that'll also pop the hatch when I finish), and that neat little fading dome light. I was building the power window switches into the door panels when the car was hit in the rear quarter while parked for the night. It sits now, making me feel awful until I find a good job and can fix it.
The 2000 is also a six but I put the ram-air hood on and built a little duct to make the airbox line up with the nostrils. It's also got a flip-down license plate on a switch that can also control the reverse and brake lights without actually being in reverse or braking. I haven't gotten a speed camera ticket since adding it, and the reverse lights are for flashing at drivers behind me who have their high-beams on. Also, once the plate flips down it reveals a nozzle for a windshield washer squirt gun that's aimed squarely at the driver's side of the car behind me. None of this makes the car go much faster or look much better, but it's good fun on the freeway.

that stuff is awesome! i hate taking apart the third gen dash, too many damn screws. your interior skill must require a lot of patience. and i have to agree, this is a great resource, i've learned a lot here.
Re: One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?
Actually, I didn't take apart the 3rd gen's dash at all. The entire thing's made up of 4th gen wiring harnesses with 3rd gen connectors for the motors and actuators. After it was tested and I knew it worked, I put it all into some conduit and zip-tied it UNDER the dash. I did take off kick-panels, but no major dash-digging except removing the stereo to run things behind it. I appreciate the compliment, but it wasn't skill as much as it was patience. I spent a ton of time planning and gathering exactly the right parts so I could do it as close to how GM woulda done it as possible. It's easily removable and I only ended up cutting one wire on the car: the wire to let the BONG BONG BONG noisemaker know the key's in the ignition. Now the car makes the 4th gen's noise.
The mods to the 2000 Firebird were planned the same way. It's easily removable (you know, if the cops have a problem with it) and only one wire got spliced there, too: an ACC power wire behind the fusebox. And then if I have to take out everything, I'll have a spare ACC wire!

Re: One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?

Driver gets surprised when the water hits his windshield, hits hit brakes....turns the car sideways/person behind him hits him, when he hits the brakes......Not a real intelligent thing to do.
Someone did that to me & screw my front end.....I'm taking out the rear of that car & putting it sideways! Cops aren't the only ones who can do the pit maneuver!
Re: One 4th-gen wheel on a 3rd gen?
I'm a pretty responsible guy. I'm not spraying people who didn't do something to earn it. If someone rides my ***, they get my brake lights (without jake braking thanks to my switch). If they keep doing it they get the spray. I've only done it to two cars so far, both ricers who were racing and got up on my rear. One car even gave me a thumbs-up after I did it to them.
The reverse lights are pretty dangerous, though. They can dazzle a driver pretty well on a dark night. I flash them twice like people flash their highbeams when someone behind me has obnoxiously bright lights or won't turn his brights off. One time I did it to a truck with those bright blue lights and he turned on his highbeams at me and left them on. Since he was doing it specifically to spite me, I held down the button and after about five seconds of him swerving blindly, he gave up and turned 'em off.
Now I need to develop something to use on drivers in FRONT of me...

Anything that endangers another driver, for whatever the reason, is foolish.
Legally, all the above would no doubt fall under reckless disregard.
