Okay non-thirdgen but GM, need an answer..

My sister owns an '88 CK1500 pickup with a 4.3 liter V6 and three speed tranny. My question is: what type of tranny is it? I got underneath and the pan looks like a Turbo 400 but when i went to order a shift kit for it, it said up to '87 for the turbo 400. So what do i order?

It could be a 400. Does the shifter show a
3 spd or OD pattern? You could take it to a
tranny shop and have them ID it for you.
AND if all else fails, there are numbers on
a plate by the tail or stamped into the case
that can be decoded to ID it.

I have a '89 CK2500 and it has a Turbo 400. (I just had it rebuilt.) Yours probably is too.

Okay i'm not that stupid that i dont know the difference between an OD tranny and a three speed. I can rattle off the gear ratios from my head and i know even what the pans look like off the top of my head. What i was confused by was that the hurst book says to '87 for the Turbo 400 shift kits. Thanks VortecZ, i think i might just buy the shift kit, install it and see what happens.

The kit you are looking is the TH400-1-2 from Trans-Go (fully automatic). The price on this kit is $53.84 plus about $5.00 shipping. I add the center support seals to the kit to help eliminate the 3rd gear leaks,(case to center support). If I can help call me at 800 7763288 M-S 10-6 PST or e-mail me.
