Mini spool.. whining noise

Alright so i just bought a complete rear the other day.. used to have 2.73:1 open stock 6 cyl rear.. 7.5 inch... new rear is all the same size just with richmond gears, mini-spool. when im cruising between 20 and 60 and let off the gas i get a whining noise.. i assume the backlash on the gears is not adjusted properly. but i just wanted to see if anyone has experienced any similar problems with a rear. and what kind of problems might come if i drive on it for a couple days

Re: Mini spool.. whining noise

Mini spool has nothing to do with gear noise Any noise would be related to the gear wear pattern.

yes i know this... my question was if people experienced noise from the rear diff. and if driving on it cause problems.. i think the backlash is too tight but i wont be able to reshim it for about a week when i have off again

You said it used to have 2.73 gears so I'm assuming a gear change was also done. Pinion depth could also be wrong. Did you take the shims from behind the pinion bearing on the 2.73 pinion and put them behind the bearing for the new set?

Did you even check the gear pattern when it was assembled?

If you just bought this rear end, was it used or just rebuilt? If it doesn't have any miles on it yet then fix it NOW. If it was used when you bought it then it's too late to do anything about it now. Get some ear plugs or a louder sterio.

yes it was used and i installed the whole rear axle not the gears. i was just hoping reshiming the gears would help/fix the problem

Re: Mini spool.. whining noise

It depends on the wear pattern. Adjusting backlash is only part of setting up the gears. If you set the backlash to within limits, it won't fix an improperly installed pinion depth.

Re: Mini spool.. whining noise

most likly the gears are shot if they were set up wrong and ran any amount of time. If gears are set up wrong and ran they will wear improperly and turn them into junk.
