t-5 replacement

I just recently blew up my wc t5 it was a rebuilt for an 89 LB9 with 3.45 rear gears and cable speedo.
the motor is an L98 now but thats the only change

Im putting a t-5 back into it but havent done any investigation to make sure its the same

I plan on just removing the old tranny from the bellhousing and shifter; dropping the crossmember and sliding the new t-5 in the old ones place.

I was wondering what I need to look for to make sure the new t5 will work right and if ill be able to just slide it in like I plan or if I should anticipate any problems

thanks in advance

Perhaps I misunderstand, but an 89 IROC would have a cable-driven speedo. The swap is straightforward. The sticky might have something useful.

You are right it was a mistake on my part i meant to say it was a cable speedo and I checked the stickys and found out that certain t-5s had different gears and shafts but I figure if the shafts are the same the gears wont do anything but change fuel economy and speedo right?

I'd chose another Chevy WC T-5 (88-92) from a V8 and you'll be good to go (though, of course, an earlier non-WC would work. I'm unsure of the years there, perhaps 84 to 87). If the replacement WC was originally electronic, simply swap your current speedo sleeve into the replacement. You may need to swap the drive and/or driven gears to make the speedo read correctly. More pedestrian cars got the .63 overdrive, while the more performance-oriented cars, were equipped with .74, IIRC.

Re: t-5 replacement

Well a buddy of mine runs a junk yard and he gave me the new t-5 and its the only one he could find so if its not wc Im gonna have to deal which is kinda depressing...

I know that the wc is pretty much the same but with different bearings correct? so if its not a wc is there anywhere I could buy the bearings and possibly anything else to beef up the strength of the tranny? The motor has almost 500ft-lbs of torque which is way over the t-5 rating...

Im sure I can do the work myself Ive just never torn apart the inside of one before any suggestions?
