Stock 5 speed handle 355??
Hey i was wonderin because i was lookin through other posts and saw some people mentioning that the 5 speeds they put in the Z28s wouldnt be able to hanlde the power of a 350? that would mean it couldnt handle the power of the 355 im gonna swap in either right? if so this is a BIG prob... What can i do then that wouldnt cost much since my 5 spd would be worthless??
well more cubic inches doesn't mean you have more power, but most likely you do. it is correct gm didn't think the t5 or wc t5 could stand up to the l98 power.

no speed shifts. as long as you have a WC five speed it will last a while. mine did break, though. look at my sig to see the punishment mine took.

I broke my T5 with my modded 305 L69.
I was pretty rough on it tho, sometimes you just gotta bang gears!
If you're easy on it, it will work for a while but i recommend a T56.

Mine handles the power, but I've already had to replace 2nd and 3rd gear, and their synchros. There really isnt anything you can do to beef up a T5. If you've got a 83-87 T5, try and find an 88-92, as the world class version is stronger. As long as you dont use slicks or power shift, it should last for a while. Abuse is what kills it, not regular driving.

Ditto, as long as you don't abuse it, it will hold up for a while.I also destroyed a WC T5 with a stock TBI 305,so they're pretty weak.I replaced the syncros,a fork,2nd and 3rd gear, but I don't expect it to last long behind a 350.
There's no reasonable way to make this trans any stronger,it's a waste of money.Save you're money for a better trans. Most are switching to T56 (six-speed) or Tremec (five speed). As long as you're running a T5 behind a 350, just refrain from banging 2nd gear, and try not to snap the clutch too hard.I, for one, am not able to control these impulses. If you're like me,swap out a stronger trans as soon as possible!

Mine is handling quite well with 118k miles on it and many 12 second passes. As Kevin mentioned above, no power shifting and no clutch dumping on slicks. I shift fast but I do let off the gas in b/w and I don't use slicks.
