I need help please!!! Thanks.. Un-Identified Object??

Hey Guys,
I have a 91 Camaro RS v8 305 TBI with an Automatic transmission.

My problem is when i shift in reverse or engage in drive I hear a clank sound. I went under the car and noticed a long piece of metal going parallel from the trans to the rear axel. When you engage reverse the long thing??? drops down hitting the housing its in and when you engage Drive it smacks back up making a clank sound. It is definetly not my trans mount I know that but I am stumped at this and what is it's purpose.

I dont know what that is and if it should be moving up and down like that or if there should be a mount there to cushin it. Im trying to fix that noise but I dont even know the name or part or even where to start.

Anyhelp would be appriciated..

The long piece is the torque arm. It should have a bushing.
