Axle Woes...

My passenger side rear axle has about one inch of play going in and out; however it does not leak, but I'm worried my axle might fall out while I'm driving back and forth from Austin to go to school. I think it might be that axle bearing, but if anyone else has had this problem, what was it it? If it is the bearing, what is the procedure that I need to do to fix it?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx

if you have a inch of play, and i doubt you do, you need to STOP DRIVING IT and look at it, or have it looked at. i can't think of any way the axle can move that much without moving more and coming completely out. check it out to be sure and to be safe.

With the c-clip in place it shouldn't have any more than 1/4" at the most. If it has 1" then it sounds like the c-clip is missing and something else is preventing it from actually falling out.

Pull the rear cover and inspect.

It may not be an inch, maybe about 1/2" to 3/8" only on the right axle. I have driven it like that for at least a year now. Do I need to replace the c-clip or is it something different? Maybe the axle needs replaced. I have not yet messed with my car behind the driveshaft, so what exactly do I need to do to fix this problem?
Thanx everyone.

You have a C-clip to prevent the Axle from going outward, and there is a "cross pin" which holds the pinion gears to the carrier and keep the axles from going to far inward, which would cause the C-clips to fall out.

If you don't know about rear ends (which apparently you don't - not trying to offend) I would certainly have somebody familiar w/ them look at it.

I think its easy to "mis-judge" actual movement cause the tire makes it seem like more. I think if you were to measure play from the axle flange, it would be alot less than what you think it is, but I would have it checked out anyway, for peace of mind.
