speedometer

I have an 1984 camaro v6 2.8l automatic and my speedometer went out. And I noticed that without the speedometer working the car does not shift beyond a certain gear. Now I have noticed on other cars that when the speedometer goes out it does not affect the shifting but on mine it does. Can anyone explain to me why? And what should I look for to fix it? And if possible is there a way to make it so that the darn speedometer doesn't have so much control over the car, if it was up to me I'd leave it broken, but it controls my transmission. Any thoughts on this?
