Trans Go rebuild problems!!
You guys seem to know alot about the Trans Go kit thats suppoed to fix the factory 700R4 problems- so hopefully you could help me with this problem....
My dad and I got the Trans Go kit to put in my 700R4 because it was slipping in and out of overdrive...well we put it in ourselves in the garage and didnt have any major problems, UNTILL...we had it all bottoned up and we ran it through the gears while it was still up in the air and they all seemed fine. SO we set it down on the ground and we go to back out of the garage to test drive it after doing the pre-adjustments- No Go
- The backup lights are on but its not moving, in fact the idle dosent sound like it is dropping to get in gear, but if you give it lots of gas it will crawl backwards...so we called the guy who sold us the kit and he says "dont floor it you will burn up the clutch" and that he has no idea why it would do that and the best thing to do would be to take it apart and check everything again. SO we do and we find a pin fell out but that that would only affect 3rd and 4th gear but we put it down and try again hoping that that was the problem...NOPE!...Needless to say we have repeated this process 2 more times and nothing still. We pushed it out of the garage and road tested it and nothing else seems wrong- just reverse!
I would take it to a pro shop but I dont want to pay $400
for them to try it too, plus I have very little $$ being that I have to pay for everything myself and being a high school senior I dont have the time or energy to keep moving it in and out of the garage(just putting it in the garage requires moving all of our cars several times-more cars than places to park them at my house!!! Dad's fault!!!)
SO anyways please tell me someone out there knows what may be going on!!!
I havent had my baby(Firebird) in over a month and I am having V8 withdrawls
cause I just got into an accident with the only other running V8
-my moms 78 K5 Blazer so that is now in the shop- I was actually a good thing I wasnt in my car for that accident- It would of been serious injury or worse!! I hit another big truck...in my car I would of ended up under her or in a wall!!
Thanks in advance!!!

Are you sure the TV cable is adjusted correctly? It sure sounds like it's not, so you'd be pushing on the pedal all day just to move it a bit, perhaps it's not hooked up good or has some slack? Just a thought...
This is why TransGo doesn't like selling to the public. My first transgo kit needed to be taken apart a few times to get it right also.
First thing to check would be the pressure regulator valve train in the pump, it's accessed from in the pan. If thats ok pull every valve out of the valve body and make sure it's all in the correct order, check all added plugs and holes in the separator plate for proper location and be sure all were done for your specific valve body type.
Be sure evrything is clean so no valves hang up. Make sure no steps were skipped.
Here is a site with valve body valve arrangement pictures and other useful info on the transmission.

Now you know WHY shops charge $XXX. to do this stuff. Not flaming just pointing this out. You may have had a tranny on the way out to begin with OR you may have cooked it by making some mistake since trust me on this, the kit works.
What you must do is pull down the pan and first, take a look to see if the Pressure Regulator assy is laying in the pan or at least not in all of the way. Next the VB and plate will have to be taken down and pretend that some other person worked on this and you have no idea what might be wrong and retrace all of the steps. I am sure you will find what it is if you proceed as I said.

Actually if you think about it, it makes sense. What we do, usually unconsiously is to assume that certain steps are OK. It happens all the time. In fact I had a problem with a five speed Mercedes automatic, that after using this procedure I found, D'oh, never mind!

simple problem...easily fixed.
your pressure valve is laying in your pan. when inserting the valve and spring... you have to set the o- ring on the highest lip. don't worry, you won't have to remove the valve body. just use vaseline to hold the spring in there so that it doesn't fall out while trying to set the clip in the right location.

Thanks everyone for the info but a few more ?'s... we have taken the pan down 3 times and never noticed anything wrong with the pressure valve...and if that were the case wouldnt it also lose the forward gears too??? It runs great in all the gears except no reverse...Me and my dad have agreed to take the pan down one more time to check everything but if it still isnt fixed I might be able to use some of the money I got from the accident to take it to a shop that was recommended to us by Dana at Pro Built...
Thanks everyone!!

oh, i guess i misread. I thought you lost all gears. This happened to me when i installed mine. now it sounds like more of a problem with linkage. I doubt retainer ***** would cause you to lose reverse entirely.
Sometimes the snap ring doesn't seat all of the way into the groove. The Boost valves will then not be properly lined up and amny different problems can occur due to this. You will need to push up on the valve with a screw driver and then push on the snap ring. The ring should not move if it is in place. If that is OK, and it may very well be, then you will have to retrace all steps involved with the kit install.

I'm no tranny expert, but after installing a "shift kit", I had the same problem. Any troubleshooting chart you read will tell you to check the PR valve, first.
Though in my case, the valve did not fall out, but it was not in the proper place. As I recall, there is a "false" groove that you can put the snap ring into that is too low. You have to push the assembly deep into the bore and get the snap ring into the proper groove. After correcting that, everything was just fine.

You really should remove the pressure regulator valve and check it and remove the valve body and valves and check them all, check the gasket positions, plug, hole and check ball locations. Something obviously was done wrong during the shift kit installation, it's just a matter of finding it.

Which kit was it? I just bought the "Heavy Duty" kit from probuilt and am trying to get an idea of what I'm in for. Did you do much of the work? How were the directions to follow?

I dont recall which kit it was-Dad ordered it ...We did all the work ourselves in our garage and it wasnt too bad, but there were those moments when my dads frustration was "expressed with a few colorful words" but that comes with every project invoving a car in my family! Thank goodness for Dana at ProBuilt who sold us the kit!!! My dad called him many times and he was always able to help us when my dad came close to taking the biggest hammer we had to it...
As for the insructions- thats were the kit lacks...It says on it that it is not a kit for do-it-yourselfers and it begins assuming you know how to take everthing apart and was written assuming you work on Trannys alot...
So its difficulty all depends on your experiance and wether you feel sure enough to do it yourself. Personally I didnt have the $$$ to take it to a tranny shop to be done so it was my Dad and I first time ever even cracking open a tranny except to change filters and it wasnt too bad just long and tedious, but my dad has alot of mechanical experiance working on our race cars and stuff... It is not a quick job either-it took us 2 weeks working on it from 5pm to 8pm...
I suggest if you do decide to do it yourself you have the # of someone who is experianced on hand like Dana from ProBuilt...
So it comes down to how long you want your car to be out of commission and if you have to money or ability to attempt this project!
Good Luck!

did you rebuild the whole trans? or just install the shift kit? just curious? also i'd say check the linkage first then proceed to the pan. the linkage can get screwy, real easy. just my .02

Shift kit...
We just installed the shift kit...although we should probably rebuild the whole thing considering there were small metal teeth of some sort in the fluid the first time we drained it
...but no $$$ or time to do that so for my X-mas present I think my dad is going to pay to take it to a tranny shop if this last attempt dosent succeed...but I dont have time to try one last time until after the new year so I wont know untill after then...
Thanks for all the help!!!
