82 camaro tranny swap

I am purchasing a 1982 camaro z28 and it has the stock 3 speed auto th200. I was wondering what it would take to put in a turbo 350 or a 700r4? any input would help thanks.

Re: 82 camaro tranny swap

I see your new to the site, do a search for 200c and you will come up with alot of info of people swapping them. My car has one and I've picked up a 200-4r to swap in. Its overdrive and its the exact same length as the 200c, so you can re-use your driveshaft. I believe spohn sells a 350$ crossmember/torque arm combo that should work for the 2004r. The transmission crossmember will have to be mounted farther back if you use a 2004r. But if you use a th350 I believe you can get away without having to move your crossmember and reuse your driveshaft, but no overdrive. B&M sells a 100$ kit so that you can mount a factory torque arm onto the tailhousing of a th350, the 2004r would need either a trans-tunnel mounted t-arm or a crossmember mounted t-arm.

Hope that helps.

Re: 82 camaro tranny swap

what he ^ said... i did the th350 swap into my 82 trans am. with the exception of the torque arm everything hooked up pretty nicely. I was gonna this little kit from jegs(i think) to mount up the torque arm to the tail shaft but the kit looked kinda flimsy as if it wouldnt support my hp. so i ended up going with a th350 crossmember/torque arm mount from umi performance. Its a very solid crossmember that has the torque arm mount welded on. very easy to install.
hope this helps

Re: 82 camaro tranny swap

I did the 700r4 swap in mine well its seen a few different transmissions over the years. The 700r4 I 1st used the stock 200c xmember and cut my tq arm a tad since its longer becasue of the shorter 200c trans. I nabbed a 700R4 xmember with the isolators a few years later cut some holes in my frame and an using it much nicer. TH350 swap is a direct swap with the tq arm kit from B&M so its the easy way to go. Opt for the OD trans like a 700R4 or 2004R and the shifter needs to be dealt with since you added another gear. You can use a latter stock shifter but the cables are different so aftermarket shifter would be ideal rather then digging up parts. Also the stock shifter will only catch 2 bolt holes so you need to do some extra work to secure it.
