700r4 shift points off I think... Help me fix it!!
I had just got new engine and torque convertor installed on my car. The convertor stall is 2400 - 2600. The engines peak power is 382hp@ 5100 and 430 ft/lb of TQ @ 4500 RPM ( if that helps).
The shifts points are definetly higher ( RPM wise) than they were with the stock engine and the shift feel is different. The shifts are definetly more firm now. The problem with my data is that I have 3.42's in the rear and 2.73 Speedo gears so I know my MPH is off anyway. The speeds listed below are what my Speedo displayed and are not corrected for the gears I had it written down how much the gears threw the speedo off but I can't find it and don't recall I think it was around 10% fast.
The car has the following shift points according to my tach and my speedo shifts from first to second gear at less than 15 miles per hour RPMS are between 2500 but less than 2750. It shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear at just below 35 miles per hour and at about 3500 RPMS This is when I am barely touching the gas much less than 1/4 throttle. Shift 1 - 2 sounds like it is revving very high and almost puts you in mind of a high pitched wine like a jet engine starting right before it shifts.
1/2 throttle:
Shifts from 1 to 2 at about 25MPH and 5000 - 5250 RPMS
Shifts from 2 to 3 at about 55 MPH and 5000 - 5250 RPMS
I did get on it a little not quiet WOT but 3/4 + and it shifted at 6000 plus or minus 200 RPM it was hard to watch the tach and the road.
My car was set -up TV adjusted Geo correction bracket installed etc by a mechanic. He swears it is correctbut I have already had several issues with him that makes me question him. I double checked the TV cable by rotating the throttle linkage on the carb as far asit would go by hand and then pulling the TV cable out as far as it would go and it matches the gromet on the throttle linkage. Tach appears accurate shows idle at 750rpms and fast idle at just about 1500.

It sounds like the tv cable is too tight on part throttle if I took a quick guess. If you got a 700r4 specific TV cable bracket, the throw radius should be correct. First off, is the TV pulled tight at full throttle? That should be your first thing to get right. It should be tight right at full throttle. Then if the bracket is correct as I said, to adjust your shift points, you will need to mess with the governor. You can buy a governor weight and spring kit from summit or jegs to change your shift points. I think when I bought mine it was around $30. The governor is behind the round cover on the left side of trans. It is a bitch to get off and on while the trans is in the car, but I have done it several times. I could just get it with the trans crossmember unbolted to allow the trans to drop down a bit. You can pry it off with a flat bladed screwdriver, but don't tweak it too much, it is a press fit with a rubber gasket as well. Getting it pounded back on squarely is another matter. Even more fun. But it will be worth it if simply setting you TV cable correctly doesn't do it. Good luck.

yeah the governor gear works with the speedo gear and tells your tranny when to shift. since your speedo is reading higher than your traveling, the tranny is shifting early. i changed out my 273 for a 342 and i'm having the same problem.
