10 bolt vs. 9 in

i have heard that the better way is to go 9 inch when building a high horse power car. i have 2 10 bolts and a 9 inch that needs the drums rebuilt. i am on the fence about what i should do cause i know that there is a lot of work that will be needed to do the 9 inch which im willing to do but im also thinking about doing a c clip eliminator on the 10 bolt and i dont know what would be better. im looking for something that will make me go one way or the other i want to know what the best way would be to go. im lookin to have around 500hp on a muncie 4 speed but i dont what rearend to put in. i want to know what you think Thanks Ty.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 9 in

if you dont beat on the car really hard and have slicks or DR's, the 10 bolt will work fine. If the 9" is not the specific 3rd gen one with the torque arm mount and the correct width, i would forget about it.

Or buy a moser housing and axle package for a grand or so and swap the centersection from your current 9". This is a good upgrade for a resonable price.

I wouldn't sink much money into th 10bolts, even with stronger axles and c-clip eliminators ect ect, the ring and pinion are the weak points and will eventually gernade.

You will probably bust the 10 bolt pretty quick. I woudln't put any money into it. I don't think there are any c clip eliminators for the 10 bolt with the 3 bolt backing plates. The 9 inch can be used if you get a torque arm bracket from Currie. The Moser housing and axle package is $950 plus shipping.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 9 in

I had a built 10-bolt behind an LS1 in my 87' and also behind a hot small block with a 4K stall and 275/50 BFG DR's and it's still together for the new owner. Some hold up pretty well. I welded the axle tubes, rear girdle cover, moser axles, auburn pro posi with 4.10's. The car transfered weight hard too- Art Morrison coil over kit, lakewood 90/10's up front, stock trimmed springs out back with Competition Engineering adjustables with a Spohn adjustable torque arm/x-member combo and lca's etc.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 9 in

Does anyone know the weight of a 10 bolt versus the various stronger axles that are available? I'm more concerned with cornering than quarter mile times.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 9 in

It's quite a bit over a 9in and a 12 bolt is just a little heavier I believe. CarCraft had an article saying the 12 was 30lbs lighter than the 9in. If your not putting down a ton of power and you run a nice limited slip with the rest of the 10-bolt upgrades, you'd be fine.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 9 in

lol nope. I've had the ford 9's, 12 bolts, D60's, 44's, 10 bolts, 14 bolts (now that's a heavy sum-bich!) etc. I'm not crazy, just didn't type it out correctly lol
