excessive axle end play
I rebuilt the stock rear from my 91 rs this year. Swapped an auburn unit from a 93 z-28 and new 3:73 gears. Also swapped the disc brakes. Problem is the endplay on the axles seems very excessive. With the car on the ground you can push on the rear quarter and feel (and hear) the the rear thunk from side to side. I know you will have this to an extent, but this is more than normal. The c clip grooves on the axles did not appear to be worn, nor did the center pin - it fit snug.
Has anyone else experienced this? Would c clip eliminators correct this?
Thanks

Re: excessive axle end play
There is nothing wrong with the axles or the c clips. The problem is with the Auburn. The cones are worn and sunk into the holes. This creates more space between the axle gears and the cross shaft, which allows the axles to move more. Replacing the Auburn will fix the problem. Most people here know how much I dislike the Auburn, and this is a good example of why. The Eaton Posi is a much better unit and will last a lot longer before it begins to cause the problem that you have now.
This is a very common problem with limited slip differentials, but it isn't really anything to worry about in most cases. It's just a little annoying most of the time. If it was me I'd go ahead and run it until it starts spinning one wheel and then I'd replace it.

Here is how you do it. A new Eaton Posi is $440 and bearings and shims to install it are $45.
