converter bolts not lining up?HELP ME!

Just got my rebuilt one piece rear seal 350 into the car to discover that the torque converter doesn't line up with any of the 6 holes on the flex plate?!?After flipping out for a minute,i had a look at my old flex plate on the old 2 piece r.m.s. 350, and can see two sets of holes on that flex plate.3 are closer to the edge than the other 3 are.Apparently, the newer flex plate doesn't have that. These are both 168 tooth flywheels by the way.Anybody ever run into this problem before?I'm not a very happy boy right now, please help.

Re: converter bolts not lining up?HELP ME!

The older dual set of bolt holes is for OEM TH350 or TH400 torque converters. The majority of the aftermarket converters use the TH350 pattern but that doesn't mean you can't put a TH350 converter onto a TH400 or even a powerglide with a turbo spline input shaft.

Is your new flexplate designed specifically for a TH350 or a TH400? Most will have a dual bolt pattern or a TH350 pattern.

Re: converter bolts not lining up?HELP ME!

Sound like you need 1 of 3 things

{1} Dual pattern flex plate (will eliminate this in future swaps-use with any torque converter)
{2} Dual pattern torque convereter ( see above & somewhat pricey)
{3} Correct flex plate with correct bolt pattern

That's all I can think of.
[edit]
Thanks for the info Stephen!! I had NO idea there was that issue!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Re: converter bolts not lining up?HELP ME!

yes they do and all the bolt holes are the same distance but "flywheel" and "torque converter" don't go together. It's called a flexplate.

Although I've never tried it, I doubt a diesel flexplate will even attach to a 350's crank.

Re: converter bolts not lining up?HELP ME!

I'm ok now.I spent a couple hours unhooking the motor and have it hanging from a chain as i type this.Went down to my local NAPA and lo and behold, they have the proper flexplate for a 1 piece with dual bolt pattern.I don't know how i ended up with this orphan one,it must go to a truck or something that doesn't use the 700R4 trans.I do know that i won't do another motor swap without checking first. Thanks for putting in your 2 cents guys'
