Throttle valve cable
I rebuilt my TPI over the last weekend and broke the end off the tv cable that runs to the tranny. Cant seem to locate a replacement locally and havent had any luck finding one online. I've tried searches for throttle valve detent cable, tv cable, kickdown cable, cant seem to find one. Anyone know anything else it could be called? Should be easy to find I would think.
1988 IROC, 5.7, TPI, 700R4 tranny.
any help appreciated!

Re: Throttle valve cable
Thanks for the trying! Finally found one tonight through searching the AC Delco parts numbers. Cost 15 bucks. Summit had several but they were all for carbed engines. AC Delco part number is 25521263, there is a difference as the 5.0 engine cable had a different part number. Did a google on the part number and it turns out Summit had it after all, but did not list it under the tv cable heading. Just for future reference in case anyone else has this problem!

above is the link to the delco parts website, you may have to hit the "home" link and enter your car's data, mine was input for my 88. Under mine it has a listing for two different cables:
CABLE ASM-A/TRNS T/V
Part Number: 10066475
Product Notes:
[Auto Trans Throttle Valve Cable]; Cable, throt vlv ; 5.0e
Per Vehicle: 1; Years: 1988-1988
CABLE ASM-TRANS THROT VLV CONT
Part Number: 25521263
Product Notes:
[Auto Trans Throttle Valve Cable]; Coded od ; 5.7-8
Per Vehicle: 1; Years: 1988-1988
One was for the 305 and the second was for the 350. Summit had it also if you enter the AC Delco part number it takes you to a cable assembly but has no pics or any other info, that was probably it but I went with the other as it was half the price and OEM. Will know for sure if its correct in a couple of days when it arrives.
I looked up the below information for an 86 (assuming thats what you are looking for) this is what it gave me:
CABLE ASM-TRANS T/V CONT
Part Number: 25515598
Product Notes:
[Auto Trans Throttle Valve Cable]; Coded fj ; 305h ; MD8
Per Vehicle: 1; Years: 1985-1987
CABLE ASM-TRANS THROT VLV CONT
Part Number: 25521263
Product Notes:
[Auto Trans Throttle Valve Cable]; Coded od ; 5.0f
Per Vehicle: 1; Years: 1985-1986
So the 25521263 may likely be the same cable you need. Regardless if you drop the 350 in her. Hope this helped.

Re: Throttle valve cable
Cable finally arrived yesterday, put it in this evening. It is the correct cable! Also, it is a PITA to remove and replace, luckily I was changing the filter/fluid and rear mount so I had everything undone and could lower the tranny enough to access it. Now comes the interesting part, adjusting it!

Re: Throttle valve cable
Had to remove the tranny crossmember, which isnt that hard to do. Issue is I have big hands and when you are trying to hook the cable back up to the tranny on that little pin its kind of hard to manuever between the trans tunnel and the trans. It keeps wanting to come off when you go to push the cable cover into the hole in the trans. Had to unbolt the tv bracket and arm from the plunger on the transmission, stick the cable in the hole and bolt it down, then hook it on the arm and push it all back up inside the housing in one piece. It may not be as difficult for someone with more nimble fingers to do it without removing the pan as I did.
As far as the adjustment goes, the service manual goes into hooking an oil pressure gauge up and a bunch of other crap, I havent sat down to read it in depth, thought I would try the method you described as that is the way I have set them on some of my other cars. Should have it all back together from the brake job and everything tomorrow and can test it then. Have to be careful though, the tires that are on it have been on it since 91 and have been mostly sitting for the last 15 years so I cant really see what its doing til I put some new shoes on her. It was a crime I let her sit this long without keeping it up, maybe she'll forgive me since I am doing it right now!

Re: Throttle valve cable
So I can drop the tranny ever so much while the engine is still bolted to the motor mounts then right? Go deal bro. So I have to drop the pan to get better clearence, or to hook the cable to the other hook inside the tranny. Sorry for the questions. It's going to be my first time replacing the TV cable.

Re: Throttle valve cable
yes, remove the tranny mount and put a jack under the tail of the trans and let it down. Be careful not to go to far and put your distributor into the firewall. The service manual says it can be done without removing the pan but I found it to be near impossible.
Good luck with it!
