700R4 stuck in neutral
well i'll start from the beginning. i have a 91 camaro z28 with 355 and 700r4. about a month ago, i rebuilt the motor and replaced the tranny. the current tranny is an 86 700r4. from day one, it was always tough to shift down into the 2 low gears and also hard to shift back into drive.
now for the problems. yesterday on my way to work, i shifted it into neutral at the stoplight and when the light turned green, it didnt go into gear. no matter where i move the shifter, it doesn't change anything. so i'm thinking ok, no problem it's probably the linkage came unhooked or something simple. so today, i braved the snow and went to where i left it, crawled up underneath it and guess what?? the linkage is working perfectly. so this means it is something internal. any ideas?? i am completely lost at this point
i will drop the pan tomorrow and take pics if they would help at all. any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: 700R4 stuck in neutral
Probably just need a new shifter cable - it may have broken or stretched inside the cover.

i may have forgot to mention this, but when i move the shifter inside the car, everything works perfect and the lever on the side of the tranny moves just like it should, but something inside is not putting the car into gear. this is (well was..) my daily driver so any help at all is greatly appreciated as i would like to get the car going ASAP.

Mine was stuck in neatral as well for a period of time and my linkage was able to move well also. i have a 87 firebird. i took the shift **** off and there was a white plastic piece in there that was ground down. you have to replace that. what i did is used a screwdriver to then put it in gear.

ok, i dropped the pan, and the pressure regulator valve was sittin in the bottom of the pan along with the split ring that retains it. i put the valves and springs back into their places in the proper order, and made sure the split ring was fully seated in the groove. and now all is well and i let a big sigh of relief as the tranny lives on for the time being
