Clutch selection for 305 w/ T56

Hello All,

I'm getting ready to do a major overhaul to my bird this spring, part of which includes a T56 transmission. I've got the complete setup minus the clutch, which leaves me wondering. I've tried doing a search, but most people seem to be going overkill compared to what I'll need here.

I was looking at the following two clutches:

ACDELCO Part # 381291 ($322)
RAM CLUTCH Part # 88516 ($355)

Does anyone have any input, or any other suggestions in the $300-$400 or less range?

It'll have 3.73 gears, factory Lt1 flywheel, and the factory 305 short block with Trick Flow 305 heads, Comp XR258 HR-12 cam, and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. Car is a 1987 Formula WS6 that weighs in just a bit over 3100 lbs.

Thanks a million,

-Levi

So, something like this bad boy from autozone?

Seems great to me. I'm kind of new to this manual transmission thing, what do I need to look for when sourcing a used flywheel? Heat marks, etc?

Thanks,

-Levi

Would this be an acceptable flywheel to use? Brand new, shouldn't have any issues.

Heat marks are a telltale sign of abuse. A shop can also measure it (like brake rotors) to make sure it's within tolerances to resurface.

NAPA's web site doesn't let you link, but I assume it's a stock replacement LT1 flywheel which should work with your 1pc RMS block.

Re: Clutch selection for 305 w/ T56

Would it be worth chipping in the extra money for an aluminum flywheel, or would I notice any difference at all? I see the steel can be had for around $100 while the aluminum runs $400-$500. Any input?

IMHO, leave the alum FWs on the track and stick with steel for street/strip. I have an aluminum behind my 427 and regret it everyday I drive on the street...

Looks like I've found a resurfaced billet flywheel and new Autozone brand clutch for $200. Guy bought them and then never used 'em. Think that'll work?
