Transmission Noobie Problem

Hi Guys,
I recently swapped my tired 700r4 for a used 700r4 that has a shift kit and corvette servo. Everything seems to run fine but it doesn't want to shift from 2-3. The RPM's keep going up but no shift unless I let my foot off the gas a little.

FYI - during the swap, I replaced the filter and used Royal Purple synthetic ATF. I also adjusted the TV cable per the instructions in my Haynes manual. I did some searches on here but couldn't find anything similar with a 2-3 shift.

This is my first transmission swap, so I'm learning as I go

Any idea on what is causing this or how I can fix it?

Thanks!

Check that the TV cable is moving freely, also check the governor.

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

Thanks for the reply Jrgunn5150.

When I adjusted the TV cable, it seemed like it was fine. The transmission I swapped was from a 91 Camaro into my 89 Firebird Formula. Is there a difference in the governors between these years?

I spoke to a guy at Aamco (via phone) and he was relaying stuff from the tech. He said something about it may be a bad solenoid under the valve body?

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

As far as AAMCO goes... If it wasn't for them and another company, i wouldn't know how to rebuild transmissions myself lol. There are no solenoids in the VB, it's all hydraulic.

however, the teeth have been known to sheer off the govenor, but if it's ONLY doing it into second, then it's not the govenor, more likely the TV cable.

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

I adjusted the tv cable as the Haynes book recommended.

Basically its...

1) push button in
2) make sure stop is against housing
3) open throttle blades and you will hear a snap or two

Is there a better way to adjust it?

Thanks!

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

Nope, you got it.

So... there's most likely something wrong in the Valvebody. I'm assuming you didn't get a chance to drive/ride with the transmission before you pulled it?

Unfortunately, no.

I'm starting to wish I would've done a t5 swap but I know even less about them

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

Well, i would get it to a local shop or guy who's trusted by the local scene to have the VB checked out.

Or if that's not an option you can try to swap another in there (if you have your old one around still, clean it first) to see if it fixes the problem and worry about the shift kit later.

It say's you're in MO, i don't know where in relation to KC, but there's a very knowledgable guy there by the name of Dan Gilsdorf who can hook you up for a reasonable fee. His number is (816) 365-6215

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

Thanks for the info! I'm actually in St. Louis.

I've been doing some searches and it seems like people disagree on the method for adjusting the tv cable...

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ent-cable.html

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-problems.html

I might play with the tv cable a bit since it's the easiest solution. If I have no luck, I'll drive it to Aamco this weekend.

Thanks again for the help Jrgunn5150! It's much appreciated.

Re: Transmission Noobie Problem

Hi Guys,
Just a quick thought... would the governor in the 91 camaro RS 700r4 be different from the one that came in my 89 Formula 700r4? Maybe if I swap the governor's, it would fix the problem? I may be way off but again, just a thought

Thanks!
