Did I blow the trannyor something else?

Alrighty, First off I have an 89 Iroc, with the 5.7, and a 700R4 tranny. Ive been doing alot of work to my car, include hooking up a megasquart standalone ECM. I think I read somewhere, that the ECM somehow controls the tranny, not sure if thats true or not. Also read that you can hook up a TCI lock up kit if you arent using the stock ECM. Anyway, after about 20miles of driving after hooking this all up, i parked it, let it sit for a few weeks. Went to drive my car, put it in reverse and the car barely would move, no matter how much I reved it. Put it in forward, moved a lil better. Now, reverse is pretty much gone I think, and so is forward. Also, after letting it sit, and trying to move it the first time, If I recall corectly, I heard a bang sound under the car. Like something had hit the bottom of the car or something.

So, did I blow the whole thing, just clutch....can it be fixed with a rebuild kit, should i buy a new one...and how can i prevent this from happening again?

Any help would be appreciated

sounds like the line pressure is low. a few things can cause that like low fluid level, aerated fluid, throttle valve problem, pump, spool valve, internal leak, and the list goes on. the bang sound...i don't know

Umm, Not sure if this helps, when I moved the car. There was a transmission oil spot up under it on the ground.

if the tranny wont hold fluid get that fixed. if the fluid is low now thats likely your problem. i had a problem on my maxima. the servo sprung an external leak. i fixed that and then a few weeks later the whole tranny went bad. so what i'm say is, if you have a seal leaking externally, you could have a seal leaking internally.

Re: Did I blow the trannyor something else?

I actually just had something like this happen to me. Went to drive it after about a week and a half of sitting and I got nothing. It moves a tiny bit, but it seemed like the emergency break was holding me back or something. But as I continued to rev and rev, I figured it couldnt be the e-breaks locking up because it would move a little more than it was. To me, it sounds like the torque converter went and blew some of the internals into the transmission, meaning your tranny is toast. Gonna have to get it rebuilt and a new or rebuilt torque converter. I got a decent deal, $1150, for parts and labor. Good luck man, sucks. Hopefully that aint what it is.

Re: Did I blow the trannyor something else?

I know this is a dumb question....Is there a way I can tell if the tranny and converter are messed up, like when I take em off, would it be obvious. Also, did this happen from not hooking up a TCI lock thing, since I no longer use the stock ecm.

Last....I have been putting tons and tons of thought into swapping to manual, yet I see some people around here thats got a suped up engine, still running the 700r4, so I dont know if Im doing wrong by going to manual or not...Any input would be great

Re: Did I blow the trannyor something else?

I'm not a car genious like some of these people on this site, but if I had to guess, if fragments from the torque converter got into the tranny, it would be noticable if you have it apart. I have no clue what that TCI lock thing is, so I cant talk about that. But when it comes to choosing a tranny, it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a manual, then go with it. If you just wanna stick with the 700R4 and build it up a little bit to handle whatever power you plan on adding to your motor, its your call. Im lazy, so I like to have the automatic, but having a manual tranny is a lot of fun. hth.

Re: Did I blow the trannyor something else?

Well, now after further review, that TCI thing does seem like it could have been installed incorrectly or something like that. I didnt know what it was till I looked it up and it actually dealt with the torque converter. So, check into that, and try some other responses here. Hopefully the torque converter didnt blow.

Re: Did I blow the trannyor something else?

So you didnt install one? Because if you didnt, I'd say that it is the torque converter, at least thats what it sounds like to me. Not sure how much of an effect that thing would have on it anyhow. See what some other people say. As I said before, I'm no genius.
