4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
I know a guy who converted his 4 speed auto in his 92 RS into a 5 speed automatic. I started to think about it & it sounded like a good idea for me to do if I really wanted to. I talked to another friend of mine who said I could get a 5 speed auto out of a Camaro SS LS1 & have it installed into my IROC. What do you guys think about this? Is it possible and how much might it cost me? What kind of parts would I need to replace?
Thanks for answering.

the ls1 auto is computer controlled. You will have to have a stand alone computer for it.
ANd I thought they were 4 speed too.
Never owned one though, just a 98 v6 auto.

Yea I'm almost positive the LS1 F-body autos are 4 speed automatics. What would be the purpose of this swap anyways? I'm not really seing the point, unless you had an LS1 to go in with it. There is nothing wrong with the 700R4.
Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
I want an extra gear without having a manual. Most newer cars these days have 5 & 6 speed automatics. Some more expensive cars have 7, 8, and on up. The 4 speed auto is slowly dying off. I know the 700r4 is good too. I just thought it'd be nice if I could convert to have an extra gear.

Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
4th gens have a 4speed auto
5th gen camaros (brand new ones) have a option of a 5 speed auto
again, you would need a computer to control it, and in the end, you would spend a lot of money making it work.
if you swap to a LS1 engine, you will already have the computer necessary to control a electronic transmission.
if you are staying with a old school V8, you really dont have many options other than buying a bunch of redundant stuff.

Really not going to be worth the cost.
Could go with a gear vendor's over/under drive system.
Doesnt TCI have a new 6 speed auto out?
And a 4 speed is never going to die off anytime soon. You probably wont find them on many new cars, but they will be around for years to come.

Re: 4 speed auto to 5 speed Camaro conversion question.
For some reason, this thread seems wrong to me. I never thought chevy had made a 5 speed auto, just the 2,3,4, and the new 6 speed. what is the trans code? if it starts with 4 it's a four speed (4l60e, 4l65, 4l80). Are you sure it's not the new 6 speed? that would be an awesome trans for a swap, and tci makes one with the electronics module included, and even a slap shifter thingy.
