700r4 TV Bracket measurements
I recently have been attempting to adjust my 700r4 transmission T.V. Cable.
I know there's about a 9999999 posts on adjustments, but I can't seem to find any with exact measurements of the things im trying to find. First off, heres my specs
Gen1 305 SBC intake manifold, Edelbrock 600 performer series carb w/ vacuum secondaries, th 700r4 automatic transmission...
My first question...
What is the distance needed between the bracket plate that holds TV cable housing and the bolt that the cable attaches to on the throttle arm during CLOSED throttle position. See attachment.
Second question. Once I know i have the proper adjustment on bracket placement.... According to the T.C.I adjustment instructions http://www.tciauto.com/Products/Inst...ble_adjust.htm
To properly set downshift points and... just about everything else, I need to Press adjust button, Slide the cable housing all the way against the bracket, release Button, and open throttle.... This is supposed to slide the sleeve out to teh proper position? Welllll, It doesnt for me... i hear no clicks, see no movement.. etc... Am i missing a step?
Third question.. so lets say i simply can't get it to adjust itself proper...
As it is rigth now, it shifts very sloppy /weak/mushy... and much to early during normal acceleration
When i drop the hammer, it shifts 'late' , or feels like it, and still shifts very very slop-tastic... this being the case.. does the sleeve need to come closer to the bracket, or farther away?
Any help and clarification would be GREATLY appreciate before i destroy my "like-new" (only 30,000 miles) tranny.... thanks

from my bracket to the center of the stud on the carb i have 4.25". you need the geometry correction bracket. make sure everything is straight and inline.

What is this Geometry correction bracket i hear about? Is it attached to the throttle arm or attached to the carb ? this is a picture of what i have installed... (sorry about the crappy pictures.. blackberry camera sucks noodle)

Try this. I used my old bracket by just drilling a couple of holes.

a couple pics of my homemade stuff. they charge an arm and a leg for this kind of stuff dut i made the geomerty corrector and bracket myself in about an hour.

a couple more pics. mine isn't perfect as you can see but the geometry is pretty close.

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
Ok, so, It turns out I have some cheap useless Universal housing bracket holding the Throttle cable and the t.v. cable.
Now, the directions regarding distance from bracket to attachment nut on throttle arm state that I need to "remove TV cable from throttle arm, AND from bracket, full extend by hand"... This part confuses me... I followed the cable sheath All the way down before even attempting this because it sounded odd... my cable doesn't appear to be attached to anything other than that bracket.. then.. goes down and left between the motor and the firewall and then follows my tranny dipstick/filler stem down...
So... clarification request... what does this instruction mean "remove cable from throttle and bracket and extend cable by hand"..... I mean i understand the removal... but if i remove it from the bracket... yeah you see the issue...
As far as geometry correction, it will just have to wait, because I am not spending 34-54 dollars on a piece of plate steel and 4 bolts
I called around to about 4 different shops and the highest price for the same part came to 54 dollars.... for a piece of metal... wtf)
To straight the line up a little bit, I just took the bolt in the Throttle arm and flipped it so it's on the otherside... the cable is now only at about a 5 degree angle instead of the 25 degrees it was. It keeps it clear of both the spring and the arm mechanisms so, I guess it's better than before.
(sorry for my apparent stupidity, I've done so much reading about this da** tv cable, but some of the instructions just dont add up, thank you for the patience and all the responses)

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
It means to pop it out of the bracket, disconnect it from the carb, and pull the cable out of the cable housing as far as you can and then measure the length of the exposed cable. Well with one hand holding the housing and the other hand holding the cable, there is no available hand to use the tape measure. I know, I did this. I ended up putting the cable housing against the back of the bracket to hold it while I measured. Also, it says to add 1/16"th to this measurement, I assume to allow for the thickness of the bracket. Well that seemed odd to me as that will not cause the cable to ratchet. So I added 1/2" and that worked.

GOTCHA... so for some reason the bracket doesn't allow the cable to fully extend, therefore, has to be removed from said bracket... Thanks for the clarification!
I'm worried I'm just wrecking this transmission with my trial and error... I have another 700r4 in great condition, but really can't afford to pay labor for a swap
Thus far, no burnt trans fluid smell.. Hopefully I'm just taking a few years off teh life of it, not outright murdering it heh.

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
Alright... So after measuring cable length, i came up with 6.25 Inches... In order to move the bracket back 6.50 inches from the cable connector stud, I had to 'edit' my bracket just a little. (see Image 1) - The bracket holds both the throttle cable and the TV cable, and moving the bracket that far back forced the throttle cable to pull open... sooo... i seperated them. I also offset the TV mount so it would line up straight with the stud instead of being angled out/in.
So it's currently set at about 6 9/16th" back from the stud...
If I punch it, it's still revving way high and not really shifting at all.
[Additional Info- Currently using P235/r75/15 jeep tires in the rear]
If it's shifting too soon (from 1>2 at 10mph), Is the sleeve too far forward or to far back? Currently, if it's shifting late, and Hard, where does this sleeve need to move?
With all this information, is it possible that my tranny is just burnt to sh** and useless?

I should state, then when I press the button, push sleeve all teh way in, and release button then open throttle NOTHING happens...
-BUT!-
IF i press and hold button in FULLY and open throttle, it pulls sleeve all the way out...
-BUT!!-
IF I press and hold button Lightly/partially, and open throttle, it ratchets out between 3-6 teeth every time...
with this knowledge, is it possible my stupid button/housing is just crappy/malfunctioning?
Currently, I have about 4 teeth on the tv sleeve showing and it's shifting hard from 1-> 2 at about 20 mph (under light-moderate accel). -BUT!-

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
That's possible, but I wouldn't give up yet. You want the cable to ratchet out at least 1 click without holding the button. You have the same problem I had, where the bracket distance from the pin is exactly the same length as the extended cable. That is why I added 1/2 inch to the measurement instead of a 1/16. Just adjust the cable bracket back a 1/2 inch and do the reset procedure again. It should rachet out 1 or 2 clicks.

Also, when the cable reaches the racheting point it has a lot of resistance, enough to make you think you're at WOT. Make sure your throtlle is hitting the throttle stop when you're doing it.

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
it wouldn't hurt to drop the pan and look for metal or clutch material. while you're in there you can check to see if the tv cam is moving correctly and fully. i had a shifting problem like yours. i put in a shift kit which fixed that problem but created new ones. when i was in there i found a broke accumulator spring which was likely the problem anyway.

Re: 700r4 TV Bracket measurements
It kicks down properly now, but doesnt upshift properly under normal, light, or heavy throttle/acceleration.
which leaves me only to believe that theres definatly something else wrong...
2 nights ago my fluid was way low due to a radiator swap... I put 1 qt dexron II /Merc compatible fluid in.... I shall post a different thread seeing as how it's a topic change -->https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-properly.html
