97 SS rear end
I want to upgrade up rear end in my 82 TA. I have a 9 bolt 3:27 in it now but I am finding it way to hard to find parts for. I am thinking of a 10 bolt and have read all the 10 bolt stickys...they are great by the way.
I found a rear end from a 1997 Camero SS, with 3:42 gears. Just wondering if this will work on my car other than the e brake. I wasn't sure where it was from a SS car if it would work in my TA
Thanks.

Re: 97 SS rear end
Is something wrong with the 9 bolt? If not, there's really no sense in changing it out for a 10 bolt. The 9 bolt rear axles have higher spline count and are actually considered to be a little stronger so unless you're having problems, you might be better off with what you have. Not to mention that a 4th gen rear swap means you'll have to compensate for the different wheel bolt pattern and it'll stick out about an inch+- wider on both sides..

Bolt pattern is the same but it's almost 2 inches longer then you current rear which means you will have to run a different offset wheel unless you want your rear tires sticking out that far. You will probably also need a proportioning valve for the disc brakes unless your 9 bolt has discs now.

Now I don't know much about these rear end. I am not sure if I have a worn out posi or a LS. Someone else told me I might be able to rebuild the my diff. I will post up some pics, maybe you guys can tell.

Re: 97 SS rear end
While 9-bolts parts are less common to find, they aren't impossible to find. Since the 9-bolt is an Australian based axle and the R&P is still in use in Australia (last time I looked).....
A far as the 4th gen axle vs 3rd gen width......I'm annoyed by people using the term "stick out". The fact is that they will SET out further, but not STICK OUT. With 3rd gen 16" rear offset wheels, they will still be under the fenders. Almost flush, but still under them.
Don't choose to go with a weaker axle, unless there is NO option.

Here are some pics of my 9 bolt. How can you tell if it's a posi unit?

Re: 97 SS rear end
the bolt pattern is identical..
you can install C clip eliminators.. I converted a 4th gen into my 3rd.. I machined the flange down on my axles allowing the axle to retain 3rd Gen width.. I have 91 & up disk
brakes. I modified the 9 bolt caliper bracket to diff flange to fit the 10 bolt..
you have to cut your diff as per mosher directions.. this leaves a perfect channel for a o-ring to seal against the press fit bearings on your axle
just a option!,,,,

Re: 97 SS rear end
maybe I shouldn't have used the words "stick out". Some people may like how that looks.. it's all just opinion, I'm just not a fan of it. To each his own.

Re: 97 SS rear end
Wow nice work!
I am not sure if I'd want to try and pull something like that off.

Re: 97 SS rear end
it's hard to tell from your pics... look inside the carrier.. will see a cone that locks to engage POSI
put the carrier and axles in your diff... turn the yoke.. if the axles turn opposite directions it's a open carrier...
if both axles turn the same direction you have a Limited slip = POSI diff
