Gear swap problems
i have an 87 rear end and im trying to put 3.73's from on 86 s-10 in it... im trying to put the pinion in from the s10 and i get the nut as tight as i possibly can and i still have slop in it...its a new crush sleeve and i took it back out and it looks as if the crush sleeve didnt even get touched....what is going on??

Trust me, it takes A LOT of torque to get that bolt tightened down correctly. Do you know when to quit tightening though? Also, did you see what the backlash was on those gears before you took them out of the old rear?

yes i know when to quit...yes i know what backlash needs to be....i just feel retarded because i went to school for this and apparently its a challenge for me

and i was tightening it with a jack and a breaker bar...with the yoke held by a socket sitting in the torque arm and i was getting it so tight that i was starting to bend the torque arm...sooo yeahhh...wtf is wrong

Without being there I cant say for sure that nothing is wrong, but I have had some that were that tight. I have some 3/8 bolts that I've used to hold the pinion still and they are bent over. Some are just extremely tight. To the point where it requires several hundred pounds of torque to move it.

Where did you get the spacer? You might have an after market spacer that is more ridgid that it needs to be. You might try a GM spacer. These things are real hard to crush. I use a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar with a 3 foot cheater bar.
