3000 rpm @ 25 mph
3000 rpm @ 25 mph
I started driving down the road and my rpm's shot up excessively. As in 3000 rpm at only 20 mph. I pulled over and waited, then tried again, taking off slower this time (my right foot is normally a 'lil heavy
). This time it was normal and i drove back to my side of town, stopped at a store, and went home, everything working fine. Ever since then, however, the intial problem has persisted.
I thought it was the tranni, but after talking to others I'm not so sure. I was suggested a bad cat, extremely clogged air filter, and bad tps. Removed the cat, problem still there. Removed air filter, and car worked normal for about 4 minutes, then back to high rpm's at low speed.
The car is a 1992 Camaro with a 305 TPI and a 700 R4.
I scanned for codes, and it pulled up 15, 22, 32, 42, 45. I know one cause of the 22 is low tps voltage. When i bought the car 2 1/2 years ago the tps was cracked and held in place with zip ties. When i removed the air filter yesterday I was nudging the tps (then the car worked briefly). This combined with the one person suggesting a bad tps has me leaning in this direction.
Some of the codes have "or's", so I was hoping that someone could use this info to narrow down my problem. I am a lil strapped for cash, so wanted to check before droppin $60 on the new tps. I know all these will need to be fixed, but I need to get to work to pay for them
.
Any help greatly appreciated.

No sensor or plug in anything is going to make the engine spin 3k. Trans is not in the correct gear or the trans is slipping. Now does it sound like its spinning 3k or is the tach just saying it? If the tach is just reading it its a faulty tach.

Yeah, a bad torque converter could let the trans slip badly, leading to excessive engine rpm at low speed. Does it feel like the transmission is slipping excessivly?

I don't know of a good way to test, other than driving it and seeing what the trans feels like, sorry man.
I'll ask around and see if any of my buddies knows of a definitive test you could run.

I'm not very familiar with the 700R4, but I'd guess a poorly adjusted band could cause it, I'm guessing they run on bands at least, rather than planetaries. Might check the trans fluid if you haven't, low fluid can cause some odd behavior in an auto. Have you ever had this trans serviced?
Re: 3000 rpm @ 25 mph
I have never had the trans serviced. I did check the fluid when I got home and it was very low. Filling it back up didn't change anything though, so I am hoping that it didn't already do permanent damage to the tranni. Crossing my fingers for the converter (or something cheaper), lol.

Re: 3000 rpm @ 25 mph
your trans is probably FUBAR'd
a 700r4 really cannot be run low on fluid.
you want to keep it at, or SLIGHTLY above the full mark at all times.
when it goes below the full mark, the pressure can fluctuate wildly
running up to 1 quart too much fluid has no ill effects.
any more and you start to create problems.

Re: 3000 rpm @ 25 mph
Readjusted th TV cable and pushed in the tps conector tight (edit to above: it's not the actual tps that is cracked, but the connector). Took the car back out and it worked great for about 5 minutes this time, then back to bad.
How do you tell if the TV cable is bad, and would it cause this much of a problem?
And its 100% not the tps? I got a few people saying that could be it, and it is bad and throwing a code, but I don't really know much about it.
Not sure what to try next, or what to invest in to attempt a repair. Thanks for the feedback, any more ideas?

ya thats the down fall to 700r if that cable isnt set right you can burn one up really quick, like a few miles quick, so what grear are you in when its wraped with the high rmps?
