Re: Spider gears...
Unless there was a major problem with the ones currently in the car, you should be able to reuse the stock ones. There aren't differnt sizes (actually there might be, with the carrier breaks). Now would be a good time to upgrade to a posi unit.

Re: Spider gears...
i snapped both of them, so i thought might as well go to a better ratio, what would be the best spider spline size? and it is a posi, i have 4 spider gears, 2 small and to medium sized ones, the 2 small ones are on the top and bottom and the medium ones are the ones that connect to the axle.
Re: Spider gears...
I can only assume you are working with a 7.5" rear end. And if this is the case you can use any side gears from a 7.5" rear end from GM as long as the axle spline count is the same.

Re: Spider gears...
The 2 gears on the sides are the axle gears, which have the splines in them, and the 2 gears that are on the cross shaft are the pinion gears. GM changed the sizes of these gears a few times. 28 spline gears will not fit into a case that had 26 spline gears in it. There are a few different gears in the 26 spline size too. You will have to match up another set of gears with the gears that you have.

Re: Spider gears...
i am replacing all the gears in the carrier, so for a 27 spline gear i need a 27 spline spider gear?
Re: Spider gears...
You are confused on the technical names of the parts in the rear diff and there function. Your knowlege shows with questions about spider gears and spline count. Check the terms: side gears, side pinion & spider and the functions in a rear diff assembly....

Re: Spider gears...
yes i am comfused haha, but with that im mind, where can i find a set of all 4 gears? i already have the ring and pinion, i just cant find the 4 other gears.., if thats makes it a little clearer on what i am trying to say.,
Re: Spider gears...
You can seach, but I would suggest that you buy a new LIMITED SLIP carrier and that would solve your problem. However: you need to know the spline count of your axle shafts & what gear ratio you now have. You never did state these important facts or give us the year, engine tanny you have (if it is stock)????
Re: Spider gears...
You bought a set of 3.73 gears that fit a 3 series differential. If you are replacing a set of 3.08 to 2.41 gears then you are going to need a complete differential anyway because you have a 2 series differential and you must have a 3 series. If you are replacing 3.23 or 3.42 gears then you have a 3 series differential and you can use it. So what do you have? What is the current gear ratio? How many splines on the axles? This is required information.
