700R4 question

Gents, I put a 92 camaro tranny in my 89 GTA, I put a new torque converter in it as well. Is there adjustments that need to be made because it shifts pretty hard into second when its cold, and it doesnt have a good launch from a stop anymore, I cant spin'em and it shifts too quickly to the next gear. Is there an easy way to adjust this or am I stuck with this performance?

Re: 700R4 question

Search the board for TV cable adjustment. It's very simple to do. If your trans is shifting too quickly it can be very detrimental to the internals.

Re: 700R4 question

I heard of the TV cable, is it hard to adjust? Do I need any special equip? Or should I just take it to a GM dealer and have'em do it? Would this cause all the problems I'm having? It would be nice. Thanks for your input.

Re: 700R4 question

the tv cable for a 700r4 is extremely easy to adjust, you need no tools and only about five minutes to do it. The cable itself attaches to your throttle on the motor, you should be able to find it by following the cable from your tranny to the throttle on your tbi/carb, on this cable there is a silver button usually d shaped from my experience, press that button in and hold it while sliding the housing of the cable towards it from the throttle side once you have bottomed it out then release the button and then you will need to manually open your throttle all the way up by turning it on your carb/tpi by hand while doing this you should here a series ofclicks then release the throttle, also in my experience dont try using the pedal to open up the throttle it doesnt open all the way on some vehichles alsways do it by hand on the tpi/carb

I hope this helps

The engine in the picture is a V6. The principle is exactly the same on the V8s.

Re: 700R4 question

Thanks Gents, sounds pretty easy. So does this setting, pushing it all way flush, reset it or something or what? another thing, is having a 92 camaro tranny messing it up? the camaro had a 305 in it, i got a 350. does that have something to do with it?

Re: 700R4 question

Yes, that sets the shift points in the transmission by adjusting the cable. You'll push it all the way flush and manually move your throttle body to wide open and back one time, during this time you'll hear a clicking or ratcheting noise. That's the cable adjusting.

The transmission coming from a 305 should not be an issue, provided you are using the same detent cable that was already in your car. GM offers two different detent cables for those cars, one for a 305/350 and one specifically for the 350. I had an issue a couple years back with being unable to adjust my shift points properly, and it turned out I had the incorrect detent cable for my application.

Re: 700R4 question

no, Its my original cable. I'll give it a try tommorrow and see if that fixes it. I miss lighting those tires up and kickin sideways. Now it just studders throught the gears, its weird.

Re: 700R4 question

I had a similar problem on my van, I ended up having to change the tv cable because a few of the strands had broken inside the cable and I couldnt get it set right, only cost me about 40 bucks and it made a huge difference
