ok. I got a shift kit and put it in yesterday and had no reverse and shifted like crap..when I pulled the pan the pressure valve snap ring and booster was in the pan..so I put it back in and it fixed that issue..took it down the street and it worked great.. let it sit for 30mins and went to go to the parts store and I lost 3rd and od... what would make it just lose 3rd and od??? It just revs and dont go anywhere..you can hear it shift but its just dead in them gears..1rst and 2nd work great...did I put something in wrong?? why would it just quit???Confused..someone help....I have it pulled apart now and ripped the valebody gasket when it came down..I looked over everything and check ***** are correct..some one please help...

 

anybody???? It starts moving again around 3500-4000 in drive but thats it..

 

come on anyone...I have taken it apart 5 times now, put a differant valve body in it and its still the same thing..no 3rd and in od it starts moving around 3500-4000...what could have happened from putting in a shift kit???all check ***** are where they are supposed to be...and it was fine before the shift kit..someone please help...dont have the extra money to get a new trans...

 

What brand kit did you use? I installed a TRANSGO, works great, They have a nice install video to download, and they have a great staff to help you with any questions. Maybe go to their web and download the install video and go thru and check for any mistakes.

 

How much magic dust was in the pan after you lost 3rd and 4th? I doubt it's a problem with just the shift kit now.

 

I have no OD after my shift kit and was told by a transmission guy that it has an internal leak.

 

it was a b&m... and there was some magic dust as you call it in the pan...so I should start looking for a new tranny huh???

 

well after talking to a transmission guy.. he told me to check the 3-4 acc piston and bore and check for a torn seal or scratches.. and to check the govener.. I did just that.. sanded and made sure no scratches put a new piston seal and checked the govener... and still nothing....I am so lost here....I have done these shift kits before and never had any problems...I just dont get what could have happened

 

how old is the transmission? i had a pressure test done so maybe that's what you should do.

 

I'm guessing you are just the victim of bad luck/timing. Sounds like you smoked the 3-4 clutchpack. That is the typical way a 700r4 dies of old age.

 

I am going to give it a pressure check..but I guess its the only thing I can do..I guess its time to get one rebuilt..any idea how much that should cost?

 

the increased pressure from the kit may have blown the 3-4 piston lip seals.

no. the lip seals inside the input housing. the piston that mechanically engages the clutch pack. was there any black material in the pan? there is also a check ball in the case, under the valve body that can leak and cause this problem. (it doesn't come out when doing a shift kit)

 

yes there was black material in the pan..

 

the black material is clutch material. time for a rebuild.

 

well damn... I have a tranny guy thats gonna go through the other one I have.. what should I get before he does it... vette servo,boost valve, trans go kit..

 

the sun gear shell is a very weak part of the tranny. get a heavy duty one. make sure the kit comes with high energy 3-4 clutches. you can also remove the 3-4 boost springs for a firmer 2-3 shift.

well I dropped off the spare tranny to have to get checked out.If all is well I am going to order the sun shell,the vette servo,the overhaul kit w/ upgrades,and the raybestos modified 3-4 clutch pack...and then my tci 300 stall convertor....and then hopefully I can get my 355 in there...

 

3-4 just went out on 700r4 trans. i put a new trans filter and new trans fluid in it when i rebuilt the motor in 08. 3 gear was slipping a little when it got hot but it still shifted. now it just revs up in 3-4. what should i do get the old one rebuilt or get a new one? my buddy keeps telling me to put a th350 in it but i like the over drive. any suggestion would be nice.

 

thats exactly what mine did...Mine is at the tranny shop now...
