I went to the track yesterday, and my pos zoom clutch was slipping every run...
I have 400 hp / 458 tq, supercharged stock 350 tpi, running mickey thompson street slicks.
I want to know what a good clutch is to use with this motor that wont slip, and i also have a 530 hp 383 on the engine stand, so i want the clutch to transfer to that engine also..
Any advise? centerforce dfx? dual friction? something else?????

How much do you want to spend, and is it a track only car or street/strip??? In my drag car, I run a McCleod Soft-lok. Very good clutch with a soft initial hit on the drive train, but it's not a street clutch at all. I've got a McCleod dual disc in a "Brand X" street car that has 440 rwhp, only had the car out a couple times so far this year but the clutch really seems to work good just as it came out of the box!!! Going to play with some counterweight changes and different material discs this summer and see how it hooks up then... Neither of these setups are cheap, but they certainly do work good. Previous clutch in the "brand X" car was a Centerforce--worked ok but didn't live too long... Cheap compared to the McCleod's, guess it depends on how much you enjoy changing clutch discs!!!!

think i will be ok with a stage 3, or go 3+? also aluminum or steel flywheel????
Senior Member
Steel on the street, need to keep the revs up on gear changes. Aluminun wouldn't live very long on the street. Just a suggestion, but for your own safety I would make sure the flywheel and clutch are both SFI approved!!! When the cheap stuff comes apart it can cost you a foot or two!

Friend of mine, another old racer, is missing 3 toes and has a large chunk missing from his calf from a clutch blow up... Though it happened 30 years ago, Charlie would still tell you a good clutch, flywheel, and scattershield is a wise investment!!!!

Senior Member
Automatics use blankets, Manual transmissions require a scattershield, I'd recomend either Lakewood or McCleod...again, make certain it is SFI approved.

is the scatter shield just a shield or just a heavy duty bell housing?
Senior Member
It's a complete bellhousing with 360 degree coverage, and a steel plate that goes between the block and the bellhousing..

i have a 2 step leavin at 5600 with slicks no problems with the dual friction but the dfx is alittle stronger correct? also just make sure you break it in correctly before your dumpin the clutch

i have to get one because the 383 is a 2 piece rear main seal, and my current setup is a 1 piece..
I think i will give the DFX a shot. see how it does.
