I have a 92 camaro with a 383 in front of it the car original had a 305 and a t-5 I swapped it to a 383 and a 700r4 and it worked fine for a couple of months but now first gear works good then when it shifts out of fist it is just like it goes into neutral and will not do anything until you slow back down enough for the transmission to kick it back down to first. Reverse works fine as well but that is it. The fluid looks good and is at the proper level. I dont really know much about transmissions so I dont know I am hoping it is some thing stupid but I dont know.

 

likely a bad 2-4 servo seal. I'm sure one of the pro trans guys here can give you specifics.

 

I am no expert but have a 700R4 that had the same problem. First it smoked the band so 2 and 4 went. It would shift 1 to 3 and work fine. Then the 3-4 clutch pack smoked and it only had 1st and reverse and would neutral when it shifted to second.
I hope the damage in yours is less than what mine had = complete rebuild.

 

sounds like your stock 700r4 needs to be rebuilt and beefed up since your prolly pushing more power then a stock r4 can handle

 

yea I had a guy in florida build it for me and I told him it was going behind a 383 stroker and it is pushing out about 400-420hp and he said that that he would build me one. I put about 3,000 miles on it and now I live in maryland and it is bad. Now I dont know if I should try another 700r4 or swap it over to a th350

 

i would go with a th350. i have had nothing but badd luck with the 700r4's. i had a th400 setting around, so i used that, it is a lot more work then the th350 would be.

 

me too bad luck with the r4s but i just got done setting the detent cable on my stage 2 tranny with 2800 stall i put in this weekend and it chips every gear with a 2 year warranty. only paid 700 for it to be built.

 

that is a bummer. either you put more money in that trainy or get the th350. now you have a coin toss, i pick heads

 

so to go with the th350 you just need a longer drive shaft or find a camaro that had the c200 trans of get a th350 with a 9 inch tail instead of the 6. did you have anything else that you had to change out.

 

i went from a 700r4 to a th400 long tail. i had to relocate my trainy cross member, change trainy mount, get a vaccume port for the intake for the modulor. i just got a new modulor and half a govener kit and the speed censor for it. i also had to have my drive shaft cut 4 inches.

with the th350, i would have only had to worry about the drive shaft (if i did not get a 9 inch tail) and the speed censor, my truck is electric speed, and the th350/400 are cable speed, they have a tv kick down cable. the speed censor in the th350 is the same size as the 700r4, so you can use yours. you need to get the right speed gears for your tire size, rear gear ratio, they are cheep to get new at:
