700r4 No 3rd or forth gear Terrible fluid leak

Ok just bought '89 IROC 350 TPI,700r4 RPO codes state 2.77 axle ratio, just to give some specs, Pics and such are in the restoration section if anyone's interested, purchase was a steal. Anyway younger gentleman who owned car said one day while driving, car wouldnt shift from 2nd to third was in OD at the time, said just kinda went into neutral so he had it towed home, Guy was leavin for Boot Camp Monday so he sold the car. I had a flat bed pick it up yesterday and bring her home after I bought it. when we offloaded it flatbed was covered in tranny fluid, She will shift Through P-R-N-OD-D-2-1 and moved fine, while I was getting car situated in the yard. Before I have it hauled somewhere for a rebuild I was going to replace the pan and filter Add fluid and see what I had. Just wanted to see if anyone thinks its worth a try. Any other suggestions welcome as well.

Thanks in advance guys.

If you lost 3rd & 4th gears, the is the 3-4 clutch pack is gone. This is very common on these. How many miles on the unit? What is the condition of the fluid? If the fluid is burnt and it has a lot of miles on it, time for a rebuild.

The Fluid is kinda dark from what I can tell, I bought it plannin' to have the tranny rebuilt so it's not a downer or anything just alot of my gear head friends are tellin' me to half a** it basically. Guess I'll just start lookin for rebuild estamates.

what are your plans for the car? If you are going to beef up the power out put you may want to go with a built trans from ati or another performance trans company. The stock rebuild wont even handle stock power if you have a heavy foot.

Well the car is in pretty good shape all the stock options still work ,windows power locks, back hatch ,antenna motor,Interior aint bad.Engine needs some work, gotta some wierd jerry rigged vacum line stuff goin on on top, wiring needs some TLC ( gotta remove PO's addons used friggin home depot wire nuts to tap always hot orange wire not to bad though just 2 spots) gotta decide what to do with the cancer spots around the winshield channel. I was thinkin' about a stock restore, but Im not above upgrading things that were wrong with the original design. What do you suggest for a replacement? Im not exactly strapped for cash but I dont have the 5k Ive seen some tranny's go for and I know the 2.77 gears in the rear end is low but Id rather not change the rear end.
